Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

A Green Cityscape

Living in the Bay Area in Oakland I have noticed how the city is both sustainable and unsustainable.  For example when I am walking around my neighborhood and I come across the view of Oakland and San Francisco I can see the thick layer of gray smog covering the city.  This smog most likely comes from all of the cars.  Though on the streets of Oakland there are more and more electric vehicles, most people still own gas cars.  If more people carpooled or biked to a bus stop or BART station or even to work, the air surrounding the city will most likely not be as dirty, due to the sustainable forms of transportation.  Another way that the city is sustainable is through its community gardens.  I have seen community gardens in both the wealthy and impoverished neighborhoods.  Community gardens help to bring local and organic food to citizens.  Also since many people in Oakland cannot afford to shop at places like Whole Foods or Farmers Markets, a community garden would  supply food for the people and would also help to educate them on how they could create their own gardens at their own homes.

Sydni, I really liked your idea of including community gardens. I have also seen numerous of these gardens around, but only a few of them seem to be active and producing crops. According to www.serve.gov, only 21.4% of high school students reported having eaten fruits and vegetables more than five times in a week. I think that fruits and vegetables are a fruit source that should be available to all people since they are a very healthy eating option, but unfortunately, they are the more expensive option in grocery stores. I agree with you that community gardens would provide a great help to people who cannot afford healthy food in their lives. Instead of reverting to food from McDonald's, which is cheap but unhealthy food, a community garden would present a more healthy food option that I think would encourage more people to develop healthy habits. Sources such as the American Community Gardening Association show that more and more people are getting involved in co mmunity gardens across the United States and Canada. If these gardens were extended to all cities, I think it would provide a tremendous impact in the city's sustainability.
