Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

New Urbanism

sanahb_usa_bod

Adopting a design know as new urbanism can greatly reduce the environmental impact that we have. Typically, suburban areas are more automobile-centered cities, meaning if you intend to leave your house, then you are most likely to use a car to reach a destination. New urbanism promotes urban planning in which commercial and residential development is intermixed, so the area becomes more pedestrian-friendly and people no longer have to use cars. It also promotes the use of green energy to power a region. Portland, Oregon is a good example of a city using the principles of new urbanism.

Hello, my name is William from North Carolina.  I really agree with your urbanism ideas, it would greatly decrease carbon levels and let more people be active.

Hi, my name is Tate McLean from North Carolina. I agree with this topic because of the increasing cases of obesity in the US and the amounts of carbon used by cars is astounding.

My name is Meghan and I am from North Carolina. I think this is wonderful idea because in my state we drive almost to get anywhere and I know in other states this isn't always the case. Starting to walk is an idea that I never considered. Thanks!

My name is Ela and I come from Slovenia. The topic which you posted is extremly interesting and I think it is one of the ways we could reduce the enviromental damage transport causes. My town is pretty small, so you can either get around by feet or drive yourself places. Every family in Slovenia has a car or even two. Our capital, Ljubljana, has many pedestrian-only areas and the public transport makes it easy to get around, but people still have their own cars and prefer to go places by car.
When I was in Berlin this summer I was told by a local that most of the people who live there don't own a car and either use bikes, underground or trams to get around town, which I think is pretty cool. I saw many people riding their bikes, even across town, which is not a small distance. I'm not saying Berlin is a very ecological city or an extremly clean city, but they are an example of how people don't use their cars but are still able to go places.
In the future I believe urbanism and architecture will help with these kinds of things, we just have to spread the awarness.
