Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Solar Roof Panels

If I were a city planner, I would try to look for alternative sources of energy. Wind turbines and solar panels are so overlooked, yet they can help our society out. In France, for example, a new law has been passed that commercial buildings either have to be partially covered in plants or or solar panels. This could help reduce runoff, reduce the amount of greenhouse gases produced, and even create biodiversity. I believe what France has done is smart, and other countries should move to create similar policies.

I completely agree with the proposition of alternative energy sources. I think the idea of using wind turbines is great, as wind power is known to be one of the best ways to generate electricity in relation to the good of the environment. This is due to the fact that it is, both, abundant and clean-producing no toxic pollution or global warming diffusions. Another alternative energy source that you could consider is hydroelectric power. It is a clean fuel source and is renewable due to the yearly rain and snow according to National Geographic. In addition to this, the power is easily accessible.  However, it does present some problems. This is due to the possible disruption of wildlife, both in an out of the water. All in all, I believe that alternative energy sources would impact the city and environment in a positive manner.

My name is Meghan and I am from North Carolina.  I think this a really thought-out answer and I support it. In my Earth class I did a project on renewable resources and this is such a good time to use it.

I agree with the idea of different sources of energy because it will increase our sustainability and decrease our carbon footprint. Having solar panels would help out a lot it would help out the environment and it will also help us out as well, it would help the environment by instead of using up non renewable gases as energy we can use the sun's rays  as a source of energy. Solar panels would help us by lowering our bills in electricity and gas. This will bring down our bill because the solar panels would help the levels of gas and electricity provided by different sources go down significantly. https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/ind … ergy_homes

I believe that another way of creating a better more safe environment is by cutting down the amount of fuel used in vehicles and the fuels used in factories. By creating more electric cars that don’t use many of the bad gases that harm the environment such as diesel fuel, which pose the most serious threat to human health. A good example of an eco-friendly vehicle making company is Tesla. Tesla’s cars are all eco-friendly electric cars that, so far, have made a positive impact on many cities in California, and all around the United States.

I agree with you that we should start implementing more solar panels within cities. Even thought they cost a lot to install they are well worth it in the long run both economically and in regards to the environment. I think wind turbines on the other hand have a long way to go to become fully environmentally friendly. They actually require a decent amount of oil, a nonrenewable resource, to run properly. Also, they kill thousands of birds and the building of offshore wind turbines destroys coral reefs and threaten sea dwelling populations.
