Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

A sustainable city

In order to create great sustainable city with eco-friendly innovations all around, we need to make sure that renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind power are in use. This means that fossil fuels would no long be of use to keep power running. Another thing that would help make cities more sustainable is to make sure less pollutants are filling the air. Taking certain transportation like buses, bikes, trains, walking and even carpooling would help clean the air around us. Recycling and composting is also a huge part of a sustainable environment. Making sure that everything gets in the right bin will create a more eco-friendly area.

Great points about the solar energy and such, but how realistic is it? It's actually much harder than you'd think to power a home completely by solar energy or wind power. One suggestion I'd ask you to look into nuclear power. Though it may sound intimidating and all most have heard about them is them exploding, they're very efficient and realitively eco-friendly.

i agree with your sustainable city idea, but it would take a long time to make happen; that doesn't mean that we shouldn't try!

I definitely think that location is a big part of making a renewable city. Some places get more sunshine, more wind or have more flowing water. An idea is for scientists to find these "renewable hotspots" and use them to power places that aren't as great.

These ideas would definitely help to make a sustainable city. I realize that yes, this would be hard to accomplish, but we should definitely make an effort to try. It is true that solar panels and wind turbines rely on the weather, but when there is sunshine or wind, it can create a massive amount of energy, This would take away from the burning of fossil fuels and put less CO2 into our atmosphere. People also need to be aware of their transportation. Ride you bike or walk when possible. If you live in a city use public transportation. If you need to buy a car, buy a low carbon car. These are all things that may be small but can make a huge difference.

I think that a great way to promote the environment in cities is composting because so much food is wasted every year, so by people composting, they are saving the environment even in cramped city apartments. There are many ways to promote the environment, but not all of them are easy to do in cities. Composting can be done from in cities, in the countryside or your average neighbourhood home.

i believe that to make a sustainable city there would have to be a lot of changes to our cities like, we would have to have a lot of solar panels to be able to power the city and that would be a ton of money also what would happen if it was cloudy for along time then you would have to find another power source and that could be hydroelectric which you have to be near a running river to be able to produce power and the other option is wind mills which a lot of people do not like because they are either ugly or the sound annoys them which would be a problem so to have a "sustainable city" there would have to be a lot of workers and a lot more money put into the power source itself.

I agree with all of these ideas, fossil fuels are a big factor in ruining our earth. With less pollution in the air, global warming will slow down. I also think that we should find a better solution to disposing of waste. WE as the next generation can help save the world.

I agree that renewable energy sources could change our world for the better. It is also very true that pollutants are changing the air we breath in as well as the ocean and marine life. Despite these issues, we still have political and social aspects to think about to make a sustainable city.  Political leaders aren't believing in the environmental issues that we are facing today. Solar panels and wind power would reduce our carbon footprints by large amounts as well but to change a whole city to that form of energy is slightly unrealistic in a small time frame. I think that this generation can help create better sources of power for the world but political and social leaders need to be on board for the reforms that must occur.

I agree with all of your ideas for a sustainable city. I think that using other energy sources, like wind and solar, can decrease the amount of pollution we put into the air. I also think that using public transportation available to us is an easy and environmentally healthy way to reduce our carbon footprints. I think that eduction people on how to recycle and what goes in what bin will be crucial in the making of a sustainable city. if we raise awareness on recycling and teach people what to do with their waste, it will benefit our environment.

Thank you for all the replies. I have to agree with the people who had ideas for my sustainable city.  I know it is hard to create a perfect sustainable city, but it can happen. It will take time though. I have looked into nuclear power and according  tohttp://www.ucsusa.org/nuclear-power#.WQlAL1Pyut8 and https://www.duke-energy.com/energy-educ … lear-power even though nuclear power plants take a while to build, they are very helpful for power. They can use water and waste to make power. Nuclear power plants are the lowest-cost provider of large-scale electricity and also don't emit greenhouse gases into the air. For a sustainable city, I also agree that location is a key factor. Depending on where the location is the way to produce power varies. Lastly, I know that political and social aspects of our society are saying one thing about sustainability and global warming. But we can't change their opinion easily so we will just have to show them. Making our environment cleaner and eco-friendly we prove that it needs the help that we can give it.
