Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Sustainable City

A sustainable city will need a lot of changes. Changes that will make our city friendlier to the planet and to the people living in it. One idea that I have come up with is planting more trees and making a law that no one is allowed to clear cut anymore trees in the city. They could have some specific areas that have been already clear cut and they keep it for producing paper or something that the city will need. If we stop people from clear cutting trees down it will help the air become fresher because the trees are absorbing some of the carbon that we are releasing into the air.

I agree on making a law that would save our trees and improve the overall carbon quality would be helpful, but there are larger, faster growing problems that have a heavier effect on the carbon cycle. One of these problems is fossil fuels emitted from vehicles. Cutting down the amount of fuel-burning cars and replacing them with electric would have a greater impact.

Hi Megan, I agree with you in the change that you have suggested and I have thought about similar changes that could be made to my very own city. However I do agree that in order fix this problem, you have to also get rid many other negatives that effect this problem. Even when if in the city you never cut down any trees if people still contiue to pollute the air with Fossil fuels.  I think another way that oculd add to the sustainable city is getting rid in home products that people use daily such stoves, A/C, the heater, etc.  I would suggest looking into things such as electric stoves that do not directly pollute the air such as open fire stoves. I found a website that I feel can help you understand the concept better if you are looking ot furhter research. Really great idea!
