Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Courtney R: Mooresville, NC USA (Age 16)

My name is Courtney. I am 16 years old and currently living in Mooresville, North Carolina, USA.
When I received my total carbon footprint back it was 11,129 kgs of CO2 per year, which was actually below our regional average of 15,918 kgs per year here in North Carolina. The majority of my carbon footprint came from food, for which I had 3,746 kgs per year.
My results were kind of surprising to me. For one, I thought that my footprint would be a little higher because I live in a family of 8. However, I learned that by sharing all of my resources with more people, it actually decreases my individual carbon footprint. For example, our family has two cars, so we have to carpool all the time. Only my parents can drive in our family (I don't have my license yet) so if they aren't home, I have to walk to where I need to go, including to school and back. It also surprised me that my carbon footprint for food was the highest. I learned from this that even the type of foods that we eat have different environmental impacts. I don't eat much locally grown food- everything is just  from the grocery store, so that increases my carbon footprint for food, as well as the fact that I have a lot of meat in my diet (we always have some type of meat at dinner), which takes a lot of energy to process for the amount of energy that it provides the consumer.
From this information I now know what I can do to lower my carbon footprint in the future. For instance, I could try to seek out more locally grown foods  to eat in my diet, I could make sure that all the lights are off before leaving my house, I could walk or bike more to get places (instead of driving) with friends or family, etc. I can easily take these small actions in my daily routine to change certain habits of mine in order to reduce the amount of CO2 that I am releasing into the atmosphere.
