Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

If I'm the city planner of a medium-sized city, I would reduce the average citizens' carbon footprint in the following ways:

1. Since the setting is not in a major city like New York or part of a larger metropolitan area like the bay area, we may not need or able to afford some kind of public transportations in the city such as the subway and train. For this reason, I would spend more budget on the bus system. We would use buses powered by natural gas or electricity to reduce the carbon footprint of the city. In order to encourage people to use the public transportation system, we will also provide more bus routes that reach every corner of the city. Moreover, we will provide more bike lanes in the downtown area and establish a public bike system.

2. The city would mainly use solar and wind power. The amount of electricity each family used would be limited, and they have to pay extra taxes if they exceed the limit. The light of the public facilities (such as schools and factories) should be turned off at night.

3. People who purchase petrol cars will need to pay ext ra taxes. Heavy tax is also imposed on gasoline. Public parking spaces are also limited in order to encourage people to use the public transportation. We will also establish a public taxi system to fulfill the needs of people, all the taxies are powered by electricity of course.
