Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Hello everyone!  My name is Chris.  I am in my final semester at St. Johns River State College in Orange Park, Florida.  My total carbon footprint is 26,742 kgs of CO2 per year, compared to an average of 17,807 kgs for the United States and 3791 kg worldwide.  My carbon footprint is higher than the average.  My appetite for good food as topped the chart.  I averaged 18,006 kgs and the regional average was 3685 kgs.  I thought my carbon footprint for home would have been the least but it came in second.  I am very self-conscious about turning light off when not in use but I am horrible about keeping electronics on such as my desktop and laptop computers.  My average for home was 7466 kgs compared to the regional average 7069 kgs.  The last two, transportation and purchases were much lower than the regional average.  This could be related to the age of the person completing the carbon footprint.  My transportation average was 644 kgs compared to the regional average of 4811 kgs and my purchase average was 626 kgs compared to the regional average of 2242 kgs.  I will have t o rethink some my eating habits in the near future.  Here are two links that will help with you with your carbon footprint.

My carbon footprint for food was also the highest. I didn't have as high of a carbon footprint as you - for food it was 3,746 kgs of C02 per year - but it still took up a big percentage of my total footprint, which was 11, 129 kgs per year. I think if you want to lower your carbon footprint it would help to think about where exactly your food comes from and how much energy is put into it being made. I know that a lot of processed foods require lots of energy and fossil fuels to be made and to get to you, as well as most of the food that you see in the grocery store even. If it is not locally grown, then chances are, the food that you are eating has cause the release of lots of CO2 in the air by being manufactured, packaged, or shipped to the store it is at. Try eating more local, or "organic" foods (which I know can be hard if your in college)- that's what I am going to do to lower my footprint!  It is a good way to eat and reduce your impact on the environment all while still satisfying your appetite for good food!

My overall footprint was14,453kgs which is lower than my regions of 15,918kgs. My carbon footprint for transportation was my highest, at 5,500kgs, unlike how your's was one of your lowest. It's interesting to me that my transportation is so high, but I drive pretty much everywhere I go. It makes sense that yours would be relatively low since you are in college now and most likely don't drive that often. However, similarly to you my purchases was my lowest at 380kgs. Just like you, I am very conscious about turning off lights when I'm not using them but I never considered turning off my laptop computers. This is very wasteful of energy, and I definitely need to make a habit of turning them off in the future. I think there are many ways in which everyone can lower their carbon footprints, and I plan on finding ways in which to improve the way I use my resources.
