Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Sustainable City- Bikes?

sockmonkeylover

Currently the majority of people often drive cars or take some other way of transportation which in most cases. According to studies approximately 6% of the world's miles are run by bike or e bike.  If people then traveled by bike not only would the amount of pollution decrease, but people would also receive the exercise that is necessary for the body to live a healthy lifestyle. Not only does climate change really reduce, but people's weights also reduce. So really if you think about it riding bikes everywhere is a win win situation for climate and humanity.

I agree the riding bikes instead of using other forms of transportation is better for the environment. It is not only the actual riding of bikes that reduces carbon emissions, but the production. The energy it takes to produce a bike is much less than the energy it takes to produce a car or bus. Also, according to this report, https://www.itdp.org/a-global-high-shift-scenario/ people could use what they call a High Shift scenario, where passengers travel by clean public transportation or non-motorized modes, which would then decrease the rates of road construction and other things that promote car ownership. If all passengers used the High Shift scenario instead of continuing the way we are today, carbon emissions could be reduced in 2050 by 40% from the original baseline amount of carbon emissions. If people started to use transportation in a more environmentally friendly way, carbon emissions could be greatly reduced.

I think that bikes are definitely better for the environment than cars, because obviously cars give off gases while bikes do not. I agree that using bikes instead of cars more often than transportation would clearly help the environment. However, having everyone switch from cars to bikes wont be that easy. Cars are one of the fastest, easiest, and at this point, one of the most practical methods of transportation in this generation, so people won't be very willing to give that up. Studies show that by 2051 most people will be using electric cars rather than cars that run off of gas, so that's a plus. According to http://blog.ucsusa.org/rachael-nealer/g … ssions-953 electric cars have lower global warming emissions than gas, so they will be less harmful to the environment. It would still be great if we increased the use of bikes, though. I do think we need to be watching how much gas we give off into the atmosphere, so using bikes more often could definitely help.

I agree with what everyone has written. Bikes are by far more efficient that cars. One reason, is the lack of harmful gas emission that bikes produce. Since more than 30% of carbon dioxide emission and more than 80% of the carbon monoxide emissions comes from motor vehicles we can conclude that they are a major contributor to the United States’ carbon footprint. The only negative to using bikes is making and disposing of bikes. National Geographic says, “Making frames and other components burns energy, typically non-renewable fossil fuels, and produces both greenhouse gas emissions and toxins.” The same article also explains that when bicycles are disposed of most parts end up in landfills because they cannot be recycled. Although this is a negative, like Sara said it by far takes more energy to produce a car or bus then a bicycle, so it is still more efficient to use or ride a bicycle.

I mostly agree with you, because the production of the buses and the cars are far less carbon efficient, but say someone has to live far away from their work, then they can't bike there, so they have to use a bus. But uses buses ARE a better way of transportation than just driving 1 car for 1 person.

I agree that biked are a great idea. In my home Seattle, Washington, we have bikes that are put around the city. With your phone you scan a barcode in an app, pay a dollar, and get to take a bike anywhere you want. I think it is a great easy solution if we can spread this kind of business, there are like three brands in seattle
