Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

electric bikes

dmnicolella

in Seattle there are bike share companies like limebike and ofo but what if we had electric versions of these bikes? i think more people would want to use them if they where electric and it would keep people from driving as much.

In order for that to work you would have to set up charging stations on a lot of blocks because you can't pinpoint where someone is going to go or restrict people from going to other places and the can only go from charging station to charging station. Making the bikes electric will limit where people can go. So I would have to disagree on your idea on making the bike share bike's electric.

I live in Seattle, and these things are everywhere

I wonder, what is the effect of making all these bikes? Because Sam is definitely right these bikes are everywhere. I see maybe five or six every other block. And these bikes are often being wasted because of reckless, destructive people. I have seen stories on snapchat of people buying limebikes and throwing them into lakes.

I don't think electric bikes would actually be as good of a solution as you think.  Although they might attract people, and people might want to use them, they need to be charged. Charging stations require the use of electricity, which is made by burning fossil fuels (such as coal). While we wouldn't be emitting as much carbon, we would still be emitting more carbon than we would with regular bikes.

True Gaby, but some people cannot ride up hills in many cities, or be able to make a very long commute.  With a little electricity assist, people could get out of their cars and ride a bike.  An electric bicycle, even if charged with fossil fuel electricity has a far lower footprint than the most fuel efficient car out there.
