Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.
What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?
Sustainable City >
A More Sustainable City
The first step in creating a more sustainable city is to increase the amount of public transportation and to de-stigmatize it. I fell that people are disincentivized to take public transportation such as the railroad or buses because it is considered 'dirty' so that has to be the first step. Then we would increase the amount of bike paths so commuters would have an easier time getting to work on their bikes. The amount of natural and sustainable resources/energy producers would have to increase as well. Citizens in the city would need to be educated on different types of recycling so their waste can be properly recycled.
A huge step would to be subsidize solar panels. People want to put up solar panels because it helps the environment and gives free energy, but often choose not to because of how expensive it can be. That's where subsidizing these solar panels come into play. People would have a reduced price for their solar panels, which would result in an increase of solar panels, which leads to a decrease in CO2 and GHG emissions due to fossil fuels.
I totally agree. The most significant thing for a sustainable city is the transportation. It's an awesome choice to deal with the public transportation and bike path first. Because cars account for many parts of the carbon footprints. And the second step to use sustainable energy is a wise decision to keep a city sustainable too.
