Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Ideas for a sustainable city

My main idea for a sustainable city would be to have a lot more public transportation. Individual cars are not sustainable because they emit a great amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. With an increase in public transportation, people would use their personal cars less and use public transportation to get from place to place like a giant carpool. This would also reduce each citizen's carbon footprint in transportation. By using public transportation as a main method of  getting from place to place, an entire city can decrease CO2 levels and create a more sustainable environment.

I very much agree with the public transportation idea, but I am actually going to take it a step further. If I could restructure the jobs completely, I would make it so that people live within close proximity to their jobs, sort of like a financial district, political district, law district, et cetera. With the exceptions of direct needs such as police stations, fire stations, hospitals, and a few others, these jobs could have their workplaces be in close proximity to each other, and as a result, people can walk and bike to work, and they won’t have to emit carbon in the process.
Also, to add on to the carbon idea, I would have subways be a primary form of transportation, with their trains being fueled by renewable energy.

These are great ideas! Also, we could work on building electric stations across the countries starting with larger cities, which would be helpful for those who are not in large cities and where public transport isn’t very applicable.

How would public transportation help the sustainability of the city? When doing my carbon footprint, the transportation was the most consumptive part of my footprint. How would it solve any problems? Also the busses will make it extremely crowded for people to walk and for stores and hospitals to be surrounded by. Lets just say someone was to be really sick and is in a rush to get to the hospital, but the many busses around would make it hard for them to get around. I think we should just use electric cars or even raise the price of these extremely bad cars for the environment so that not so many people will have them.
