Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Green public transport

Buses and trains, while better than cars, can emit large amounts of CO2 that add up over time. As of tests done in 2017, the average city bus emits 75 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while the average train is greener but still emits 28 grams per kilometer. Overall, all forms of public transport add up to emit an average of about 118 grams per kilometer, which adds up to millions of grams a year for just one city. In order to reduce emissions, there have to be changes made to either the design of the vehicle or the type of fuel it uses. While expensive and inconvenient, the design of the vehicles could be changed so they use less fuel or can be equipped to run electrically. On the other hand, different, more sustainable fuels like corn oil could be used to power the vehicle, emitting less CO2.

I agree with this. However, there are some measures being taken to assist in the creation of this greener form of public transportation. For example, according to their website, BART has 126 million riders annually. If all of these people drove their cars instead, that would equate to 756,000,000 tons of CO2. Since they take BART instead, 894,250 tons of CO2 per year are saved. Additionally, BART is powered entirely by electricity, over 50 percent of which comes from eco-friendly sources, such as hydroelectric plants or geothermal plants. I believe that more should be implemented to do the same as BART does now - help people commute in an eco-friendly fashion.

I agree with this in that we should use corn oil because electric transportation can be too expensive. Also in the making of the wind turbines and solar panels emits carbon dioxide. But at the same time if we start mass producing electricity rather than the gas we could have less of a massive carbon footprint. So because of this, I agree with Peter also in that we can make more public trains electric and have more hydroelectric plants. I say this because, by https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global … ions-data, transportation is about 15% of the leading cause of the carbon footprint.

... In the future, I am going to get an electric car because I use transportation every day and that is predominantly part of my carbon footprint. So getting an electric car can reduce it.

Izzy- I agree with making new and better ways to travel around like with your idea, using corn oil instead of other fuels.  Since carbon dioxide makes up 95% of all transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. So by taking public transportation instead of driving your own car is already giving out less CO2. A car gives out 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year but by taking public transportation for say a city bus it is 33% less CO2 emissions. But overall I definitely agree with change our ways of getting around with minimal CO2 emissions.
