Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint results

MissyP

One thing that really surprised me about my carbon footprint was how much carbon is emitted by heating. In my family, we use the heater less than a third of a year, yet the carbon emission was over 2,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide. I feel like cutting down on the amount of time that we use the heater will decrease my carbon footprint, but I don't know how I would go about doing this. I think another way that I could decrease my carbon footprint is by lowering my shower times, which are normally around 20 to 25 minutes currently. I have a habit of getting lost in thought while I shower, which often contributes to long shower times.

Ya, you can lower the amount you use your heater, or maybe you can use an electric heater, that plugs into a socket. Maybe that will lower how much carbon you emitt. My carbon footprint on the other hand was higher because of how much i use the fans in our house over summer. I dont think using the cooler would make it any better though. The amount of carbon i emitted was also high due to the amount of electricity and light i use in my house. You might not know but maybe you are using a lot of light in your house or even have extra light bulbs on in your house that are on when you dont need them. I dont think you should cut your shower time because heating, electricity, and transportation are big factors to having your carbon footprint higher, i dont believe it would be because of your shower time. It might affect a little but maybe not by a lot. Or would it? What i mean is you might have things your doing or using too much of that might have a larger affect on your footprint than your showers.

if anyone is a handy person in your family you should look into building your own solar thermal collectors. It's quite easy and would vastly decrease your heat emissions. There are several guides on the internet. http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-y … /?ALLSTEPS here's a nice guide ive used and good luck!
