Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

China, student footprint

My footprint compared to average Chinese person was way to higher. The traveling and transportation proportion weighs the most. I would reduce a lot amount of traveling time in the future, take public transportation as much as possible. Walking is also a choice. I should really remind myself when I try to catch a taxi.

I think taking public transportation as much as possible and walking is a great idea. The more people in one vehicle going one place would benefit the environment greatly.

I completely agree. If you live a city with public transportation available, then you should use it. It will save you money and reduce your footprint. It's also good that you are seeing ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

Hi William my name is Brandon, most of my carbon footprint also came from transportation. Its good that you’re able to use public transportation and I think that’ll decrease your carbon footprint. I’m from the USA and where I am located specifically there is no public transportation available, and places are not close enough to walk to. In an attempt to reduce my carbon footprint I will be trying to carpool with other people.

Hello William, I don't carpool to much because I live far from town and most of my friends live in town, but I will say that whenever I can get dropped off at my friends house I take it, not only do I have to buy my own gas, this also reduces me having to start my vehicle and drive the X amount of miles to town. If I lived in a place where taxis were popular, I would so share a taxi with someone so maybe it would not be so expensive and you have two people sharing a car so that reduces the gas usage in half.
