Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Christian's Carbon Footprint

ChristianCampos

My name is Christian Campos. I am from Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. But I live in the United States. My total carbon footprint was around 6,731 kgs. The majority of my carbon footprint came from food. My total carbon footprint was below my area's average; I was surprised that it was really low in my opinion.  I expected that my carbon footprint was going to be closer to 8,000 kgs. I learned that my carbon footprint is very good, since I am living in a First-World Country. I plan to decrease my carbon footprint by trying to eat less meat products.

I think try to eat less meat products is a good way to improve your carbon footprint!

emmasha3

That's interesting. I am also from the USA and my carbon footprint was mainly influenced by the fact that I was using incandescent lights. I think reducing the amount of meat can reduce your footprint. What other sections largely influenced your footprint?

You do have a very good carbon footprint, especially for living in a First-World Country! My carbon footprint was higher than yours, at 11, 126 kgs, but even that was still low compared to our country's average of 17,807 kgs! The world average, after all, is only 3,791 kgs! So we do release a lot of C02 into the atmosphere just because we are fortunate enough to live in a First-World Country. We should definitely keep that in mind in our day-to-day routine and try to lower our carbon footprint by taking small but significant steps, like your suggestion of eating less meat in your diet!

cschmitt14

I wish I had that low of a carbon footprint! Cutting meat products out of your diet would make it even lower I agree. A lot of my footprint came from my foot/diet as well.

armihaltian

That's really good that you have such a low carbon footprint, mine ended up being really high based on my transportation. You could lower your food impact if you ate less red meat but keep up the good work!

I honestly wish that my carbon footprint was that low. I think that my carbon footprint is way too high, at 16,065 kgs. I really need to work on that and I know many people including me, are hoping to get ours down to where yours is. A lot of my footprint actually came from my Home, because of the lights in my house that use a lot of energy. But I think that you're doing a great job!

Hello Christian! That is fascinating that your carbon footprint is so good even though you are in a first world country. Most first world country's have the highest carbon footprint because we have more abundant resources. My carbon footprint was significantly higher compared to yours, but most of mine came from transportation. My carbon footprint was even higher than my states average which is about 15,000kg. I am hoping to reduce my carbon footprint now that I am aware of how high it is. What is the average for your state? You have a good plan on how to reduce yours even though your footprint is not bad at all. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Christian! I think it's awesome that your carbon footprint is so low. The majority of my footprint also comes from good as well. In my family we love meat and fish. To help the environment, it would be good to cut down on animal products like you said! Which we are going to try and do as well. All my other carbon footprints are way below average also

Hi Christian, I am from China and it was surprising that a lot of my classmates and myself had a lot higher carbon footpring, which was not very helpful to the sustainability of environment. I think you are doing a very good job and a lot of us should learn from you, by eating less meat product.

Hi Christian, it's really impressive that your carbon footprint is so low. Mine was really high because of transportation, even for a United States footprint it was really high.

Good job on having a small Carbon Footprint. I would say that by eating less meat you would get a smaller footprint.
