Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint (Gimnazija Požega, Požega, Croatia)
Hi everyone! I would like to share my thoughts on my carbon footprint challenge results.
Firstly I'd just like to say that this is my second time taking the ISCF challenge.
I predicted that my carbon footprint would be about the same as the average person in Croatia, and higher than the average human. I also predicted that my results would be lower than the results I got a year ago. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with my results. It turns out that my carbon footprint hasn't really reduced significantly. I was also stunned by the fact that my results are almost two times higher than my country average. Although my results did not satisfy me, they made me want to reduce my carbon footprint in the future! Here are my results :
Me: My region:
Transportation: 1,201 kgs 874 kgs
Home: 3,035 kgs 1,956 kgs
Food: 2,031 kgs 2,308 kgs
Purchases: 86 kgs 597 kgs
M y home stats are very high due to the fact that I live in the countryside and have a large lawn, garden and an orchard which all require a lot of gas, electricity and water to maintain.
your footprint is about the same as mine!
That's interesting! And were you surprised by your results as much as I was by mine?
There are a lot of things you can do to lower you footprint.
Yeah I know and I hope to reduce my footprint as much as possible, although there are some things that you can't have a huge impact on (transportation for example).
Your carbon foot print was much lower than mine (23,391 kgs). Mine is still significantly higher than my regions (15,918 kgs). Thats so interesting that your region is so much lower than mine. Keep up the awesome work helping the environment!
Hi! My name is Rebecca from China. Nice to meet you! I read your carbon footprint and I think the problem is the efficiency. I predict the electric appliance might be one of the main reason why your carbon footprint didn't decrease a lot. Actually I have the same problem too. Because those electric applications are so important. For example, I need air-condition to cool down. It's so hard for me to sleep without it. So to low my carbon footprint, I try to find something to replace them. I can use 2 fans instead of turning on the air-condition because 2 fans cost less electricity than 1 air-condition! I am not sure if it's helpful and suitable for you. But try it! Find “substitutes” for electric appliances. Hope you have a lower carbon footprint next time~!
Hey Teo, I'm Shelby from Florida, USA. It's refreshing to hear that you are ready to make a significant difference in the environment and that is the first step to doing so. I was just wondering if, in between the two tests you've taken, what have you done to reduce your footprint? I don't know what you do already, but modes of transportation and household efficiency are two key elements to reducing. Using more fuel efficient vehicles to get around would be a helpful change, or even just carpooling, riding a bike, or walking to as many places as you can. Small things in your house can have a big impact as well like changing your lightbulbs from incandescent to flourescent, on running a finite amount of water for dishes or cleaning, and sparingly watering a lawn if you have it. If you look at my profile I have provided some links to help in this matter. Wish you the best of luck on the next challenge you do!
Great post, but I would like to know the things that you would personally do to improve your carbon footprint? Like what lifestyle changes would you make?
Hi! My name is Alexis and i'm from North Carolina, USA. I was also surprised about my carbon footprint. My total footprint was 20,622kg, which was also larger than the average region footprint. However, my largest footprint was the transportation section. The reason for this is because i'm always traveling. I was surprised when I saw that your largest footprint section was the home, only because that was my lowest. I also felt that I should take steps to reduce my footprint. Some of my ideas was to start recycling and carpooling more.
Hello Teo, My name is Catherine and I am from Florida, USA. It is interesting to see the results of your carbon footprint compared to your region. My results were a little lower than I had expected because I had predicted, the same as you, that I would be on average with my region. It sounds like you had calculated your results before and you were unhappy with your results the second time around. I would like to know the steps that you tried to take to reduce your carbon footprint, because I would like to reduce mine as well. Some tips I suggest to you are to car pool or ride your bike more often because your travels seem to be pretty high compared to your regions. My Home results are almost identical to yours, difference wise, and I have heard that doing simple things such as turning lights off after you leave a room and shutting the water off when your brushing your teeth instead of running the water the whole time can be helpful.
Good luck !
Hey Teo! My name's Claire and I'm from North Carolina, USA! That's fascinating to see how your footprint was so much higher than the average in your region. I noticed you said you did this twice. How much did each category change? My carbon footprint was a little bit lower than the average in my region. My carbon footprint was 13, 643 (kg), the average in my region was 15,918 kg. Some things I've thought of to help reduce my footprint are carpooling, and walking to close-by places. Home resources can be reduced as well with research and effort! All things help, thank you for sharing!!!

Your Carbon Footprint is actually low compared to my regions, it's always good to want to reduce your Carbon Footprint! There are many things you can do to lower it such as: recycling, turning off lights or water when not in use, and reducing your usage of electrics.
Hi! My name is Taylor and I'm from North Carolina, USA. I was in the same situation as you concerning my carbon footprint. I was disappointed to see that mine was much higher than my region's, which was 15,918 kgs. It was interesting that your home numbers were so high because you live in the countryside. My transportation was the highest due to the amount I have to travel in a car that isn't very fuel efficient. It also made me want to try harder to help the environment. I didn't realize how much of an impact I was making. It's great that you are trying your best to bring down your carbon emissions. Good luck with finding new ways to help!
I’m from the USA and it is great to hear that you are trying to reduce your carbon footprint. My class’ average was over 20,000 kgs and the regional average is slightly below 16,000kgs. Our transportation was very high, but I think there is a lot that we can do to bring it down. Now that we know how high our footprint is, I am confident that we will take measure to try to reduce it like you have.
