Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

going vegan: DAY 1

elenaeusa

After discovering how eating meat and dairy products can greatly affect your carbon footprint after reading this online article: http://science.time.com/2011/07/26/how- … footprint/  ,I have decided to go vegan for 5 consecutive days.  Today is my first day, for breakfast I had fruit and a glass of orange juice, even though i really wanted a glass of milk and some bacon.  I am trying to encourage not only my family but also my friends to try the vegan diet, it is not only good for the environment, but it is also a great way to try new things that you never thought you would try before.  I think that if schools, grocery stores, and maybe even some television networks encouraged trying a vegan and or vegetarian diet for a limited amount of time,  a little could go a long way.

Dear Elena, what a great experiment!  I have been mostly vegan for about 15 years, and it works very well for me.  Please make sure that you are careful with your food choices - many people who decide to try veganism replace meat and dairy products with highly processed foods, and miss out on important nutrition.  By contrast, if you choose your foods carefully, you can definitely maintain a healthy diet as a vegan, and you will learn a lot about foods and good cooking!  Good luck - and please keep updating this thread with your observations.

This is a good idea. I know that I could not go vegan. I like meat too much. I hope that it goes well and you are able to get others to do it. This really could be good for the environment.

I think this is an awesome idea. It's gonna be really difficult to do though, so props to you. I think its good that you're starting slow and then maybe in the future you can go completely vegan or close to it. I wish that I could do something like that and maybe I can try but I know that I would have a lot of trouble doing it but good for you!

It is a great idea to be a vegan and it greatly reduces your carbon footprint. However I think that for it to make a large difference, a longer time frame. I know that my aunt who has been a vegan for about 8 years and eats a lot of local produce has a far smaller carbon footprint than I, a non-vegan have. This is because she grows a lot of vegetables or eats fruits and vegetables that are from her area.
