Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Foot Print and Reflection

nikitaliang

My carbon foot print is really high which is 23,803 kgs last year comparing to the average. The use of transposition, home and food are all much higher than the average. I found the biggest problem is my personal habit is bad. I don't remember to save resources, electricity and fossil fuels all the time. I open too many bulbs when I'm at home and I forget to turn off it sometimes when I leave. I need to realize how much it would waste if I don't pay attention to each small in my daily life. Small pieces add together could make a big influence. And another reason is that I travelled too many places last year, including a long flight to England. It really took a big part in my amount of carbon foot print. Maybe I can control numbers of places I go in each year.

Hey there! I am Kaya from North Carolina in the USA! My Carbon Footprint was higher as well, but my carbon footprint was higher due to food (I have a large family and therefore we eat a lot of food). Your traveling sounds super fun, but I agree that we have to be careful about traveling, but don't limit yourself too much because seeing the world builds up your character!

My carbon footprint is very similar to yours as it is above average, especially in terms of transportation and home. I also flew to Europe and even though it was a great trip, I never realized the affect traveling has on the environment. I, too, travel frequently and think it is a great idea to cut back on the amount of times I travel in a year or at least use more efficient and eco-friendly techniques.

HI, Nikita. My name is Laura and I am from North Carolina. I also have high carbon foot print is slightly below yours. I travel a lot causing my foot print to increase a ton! I usually do not have a problem saving resources, My home footprint was way below average, so that was a positive. I think it is important that I reduce my traveling and reduce my spending to lower my future carbon footprint.

Hi! I'm Faith and I am from North Carolina. I also had a high carbon foot print due to transportation. I traveled a lot in a car that wasn't very fuel efficient causing my foot print to increase. However, my home footprint was far below the average. By always turning off lights and electronics while I wasn't using them, and trying to recycle my resources when I can I was able to keep my home footprint lower.

I also had a high carbon footprint. I thought it would be a lot lower than it was but in a way I'm happy it was. It help me to see the changes me and my family needed to make to lower our carbon footprint. Now we are replacing all our light bulbs with CFLs and we use more natural sunlight before we switch on the lights. I reuse items more often then I use to. I hope my carbon footprint goes down below normal.

Hello from Florida, USA! My carbon foot print was pretty low compared to the average in the area at 6629 kgs. I believe most of this is due to the fact that I haven't had the opportunity to travel (which I would in a heart beat) but also that I eat at home and make most of my food as well as I don't buy a lot of stuff very often. Instead of focusing on travelling less I would put more effort in how you control your everyday impact at home!

My carbon footprint is also really high at 21,486. The average for where I live is 13,115. My transportation and my home energy are well above average. My transportation is about 4 times the average. I've decided to start carpooling more, so that I will emit less CO2. I also do not always recycle and I am going to start being more conscious of my actions.

My carbon footprint is also high. I am going to do better. I am going to start recycling today.  When you know better you should do better. So therefore, I am going to do better.
