Ebola Virus
I recently read an article on the Ebola Virus called "Ebola:Learn from the Past." It was about Professor David L. Heymann and his research on Ebola and helping Africa overcome this outbreak. The 1976 outbreak was started by a man who worked with a dead animal that was contaminated and got sick with the virus. He then transmitted it to all the doctors who came in contact with him and everyone else in the hospital was also contaminated. They realized that hospitals in Africa are not only small and overcrowded, but they do not have many supplies. Because of the quick need for recyclable things to be used again, the needles were only rinsed with distilled water and not decontaminated. This outbreak was contained because the workers fled the hospital and eventually the disease died out.
This raises the question, can the United States actually be susceptible to an outbreak of Ebola? Even though we have the best doctors and medical centers, the Ebola virus is a very fast-spreading disease.
People are really overreacting about Ebola. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_an … e_are.html Ebola is not an airborne disease and can only be spread by touching the patients body fluids. These doctors are being infected with Ebola because of improper medical supplies and not being protected enough. Obesity, alcohol, and tobacco kill more people per year than Ebola has so far.
