Do space launch missions greatly affect the environment?
There are a lot of forms of transportation that negatively affect the environment with their carbon emissions, but one mode of transportation not looked at often is by rocket. This is probably because it is not a widely used way of transportation, but there are some effects on the environment. The second biggest contributor to global warming other than carbon dioxide is black carbon, or soot. These particles absorb the sun's light, which warms the atmosphere. In a study funded by the Aerospace Research and Program Development Office, it is said that these black carbon particles emitted from space launches can start to affect the environment. The use of suborbitals in the future could contribute to this as well. The emissions from these can make a layer of pollution even higher than one from aircraft- 24 miles above the surface. Although right now, space travel does not contribute largely to air pollution, it might in the future.
Soot and carbon dioxide from rockets do warm the atmosphere on the Earth, thus spreading and polluting the area around the rocket.Out of all the transportation in the world, the rocket is the most dangerous because it travels around the Earth, spreading the rocket's reactive gases and propellants, making more emissions around the world.
Rockets also cost a lot of money and materials to be built. Materials are being wasted to construct these rocket designs and if we keep making more rockets to send into space, then the emissions from the rocket engine will pollute and spread around the Earth in the future.
