hemp vs. cotton
Despite the controversy around hemp, the plant’s fibers are extremely useful in the textile industry, and may be better for the environment than cotton. Cotton requires about 1400 gallons of water for every pound produced, while hemp requires only 700 gallons per pound. Some areas have experienced desertification as a result of growing cotton. Also, hemp produces anywhere from 200% to 250% more fiber in the same amount of land compared to cotton. Hemp also requires on pesticides in order to grow due to its hardiness, while cotton is responsible for around 25% of the world’s pesticide usage. Both hemp and cotton textiles breakdown with wear and washing and become softer. Hemp fibers are stronger than those in cotton, so although cotton textile is a softer material when first produced (although hemp textile is by no means uncomfortable), cotton breaks down faster than the fibers in hemp. The use of hemp in clothing would decrease the amount of clothing needing to be manufactured because it is more durable. Both cotton and hemp are very breathable and don’t hold on to odors . Hemp and cotton also have natural wicking effects that move moisture away from the body, but cotton holds on to this moisture longer then often deemed comfortable, making hemp quicker to dry. Hemp also has natural anti-bacterial properties that usurp those of any other natural fiber, meaning hemp will not mold or grow mildew easily. Through the various processes available for removing fibers from the stem of a hemp plant, hemp can be naturally creamy white, black, green, grey or brown. Cotton is naturally creamy-white, and both cotton and hemp can be dyed naturally or synthetically to reach desired colors. Overall, hemp is more environmentally friendly, comfortable, and durable than cotton. For additional information, please visit: http://www.collective-evolution.com/201 … -showdown/
