Deforestation

hannahidusa

Deforestation is a major contributor to climate change and global warming. Deforestation is causing Earth's forests to vanish at a rapid pace and on a massive scale. Many people have good reasons for why they "have" to tear down all those trees such as they need them money to support their families. Most of the deforestation in the world is due to agriculture. These people tear down forests so that they can grow crops and have more grazing land for their livestock. Deforestation also happens just so that we can have paper and pencils that we eventually just throw away. Sometimes, deforestation just happens because of wildfires or other natural factors. The biggest negative impact that deforestation has is that so many species lose their homes and habitats due to deforestation. 70% of Earth's land mammals and plants live in forests all over the world. Many of these animals are not capable of surviving the deforestation that destroys their homes. Because trees take in carbon dioxide to live, they are big factors in lowering a percentage of the greenhouse gas emissions on t his planet. The fewer forests there are, the more greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere and increase the speed of global warming. We can do our part in saving trees by recycling paper and using both sides of sheet instead of writing a few lines and throwing it way. Save the trees!!!

Deforestation is a very important topic because deforestation is a major contributor to carbon emissions. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, about 20% of global carbon emissions are the result of deforestation. The only two larger contributors of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere are coal and oil. Forests absorb carbon, storing it in the soil and within the trees. When the trees are cut down, they release the carbon as carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change in a major way. Also, the burning of forests can cause massive amounts of air pollution nearby and throughout the world.
According to The Nature Conservancy, tropical rainforests will be nearly gone within a century if deforestation rates continue on the level they are at now. This will be catastrophic to many of the world’s species. Even though tropical rainforests only account for 12% of the planet’s geography, they support more that 50% of the world’s species. The rainforests are such a special and important part of our world and we, as individuals a nd as countries, must take steps to protect them.
