Oil Spills

hannahidusa

Oil wastes that gets into the ocean can come from oil spills, oil leaks, careless misuse of oil in the ocean, and something you might not know is that most of the oil in the ocean comes from oily stormwater drainage cities and farms, untreated waste disposal from factories and industrial facilities, and unregulated recreational boating. And if you read that list again, you might notice that all three of those reasons are from human activities. About 706 million gallons of waste oil enter the ocean every year, Surprisingly, offshore drilling, production operations, spills, leaks from ships or tankers, oil transportation, etc. contribute less than 8% of the total amount of oil in the ocean. Oil in the ocean affects the oceans' ecosystems greatly, causing some organisms to die or move to new homes. We can help prevent oil from getting into the ocean by decreasing our use of motorized water vehicles that are unnecessary (ex. motor boating) and by treating and decreasing waste disposal for factories and industrial facilities. There are many other many other ways to prevent oi l from getting into the ocean and to protect the environment!
