Turf Grass: The Ultimate Water Saver, or the Ultimate Oxygen Eliminator?
Hi my name is Alexa, I am a 17 year old from California, USA. My mother and I were having a discussion the other day about all of these turf grass lawns being laid down due to the drought here. This initially seems like the perfect solution. The ultimate way to save water! Homes and schools all over the state have begun replacing grass lawns with turf in order to join this water- saving revolution. However, a dilemma my mother and I were pondering over about this was whether getting rid of all of this grass could have any impact on the air quality. Plants are the biggest contributors to the oxygen being pumped through our lungs. If everyone gets rid of their grass, what will happen to the oxygen in the air? Will it be decreased to such a low level that it won't be able to sustain all of us? Will the levels of CO2 that plants take in rise to an exorbitant and dangerous level? What do you think? Could this genius way to save water actually backfire? And if so, do you think the impact would be as large as I just described or would it have only a small impact?
