Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My carbon footprint compares to the average Chinese person.

irvinpeng

I'm a Chinese from Guangdong, China. Compare with average Chinese carbon footprint, my carbon footprint is way too high. I felt very guilty about that because it's bad for environment, since human's lives base on environment, too much carbon footprint is killing people. So since I don't wanna kill any people, I have to reduce my carbon footprint. First, I have to give up laptops and cellphone and AC and lights so that I don't use too much electricity. Also I have to give up travelling by car because it uses too much oil and release too much Carbon dioxide. As soon as I have the ability to farm, I will move to a countryside and farm to support myself without any electricity or gasoline. To protect our environment and resources, I suggest you to do so.

Great post, but having a very high carbon footprint isn't killing people, you're killing more animals than people. Your motivation to reduce your carbon footprint is great! I don't think it should be taken as far as moving country side without electricity or gasoline. Not sure how that would be sustainable. But if that's what you have your mind set on I say go for it

Those are some good solutions that you have come up with. Many people are way above the average and it's not good. I'm personally at the average of my area but I still think that I should be lowering my carbon footprint as I can. There are many simple ways to bring it down like you said like shutting off the lights which I do as often as I can. You sound like your on the right track and should keep it up.

My carbon footprint was also high compared to my region. I felt guilty as well, because most of mine came from transportation, which is something that could easily be fixed with enough effort. It also gave me motivation to do my best to help the environment. Those are some very good solutions you have come up with. Maybe try turning lights off at your house, or turning the water off when you aren't using it. Also, maybe try carpooling with friends or family, or get a fuel efficient car in order to reduce emission. It's great that you've put so much thought into how you can help the environment.

My carbon footprint is slightly lower compared to my region. I do think I need to lower it and I feel a bit guilty about it. You came up with good ways to lower your carbon footprint. The majority of mine came from home so I plan to lower it by using less electricity and turning off water when I'm not using it.

My carbon footprint is very compared to my regions total. I feel bad that i have such a high carbon footprint compared to my region but my carbon footprint is high because of how much a travel. Transportation was the highest area for me and i know there is lot that i can do to minimize my carbon footprint. There is a lot that you can do also to minimize your effect on the environment. You don't have to completely get rid of all things materialistic but you can minimize them such as, cutting down time using electronics, or turning the lights off and using natural lighting instead. These are a few ways that can help you minimize you carbon footprint.

Hi! I totally understand how you feel, as I am from California, USA and my carbon footprint is substantially higher than my area, all due to transportation. I commend your enthusiasm for wanting to make a change so soon and effectively! I would love to make drastic changes in my lifestyle to help the environment, but I think it will take baby steps for me. This is because transportation is essential to getting myself to school everyday. However, the largest contributor to my high carbon footprint was my air travel. It's frustrating because any type of personal transportation has a negative effect on our environment, but it is essential to my lifestyle, at least until I go to college and settle in to one place for a while.
