Correlation Between Wildfires and Ice

As recent studies have shown there is a definite correlation between wildfires and ice melting. In one study by Jeff Goodell, Goodell talks to ice specialist Jason Box and Box explains to him his theory of “dark snow”.  He proves the correlation through his theory. Wildfire ash from fires in the US and Canada travel up to Greenland. The ash then absorbs into the snow affecting the snows reflectivity against the sun.
Ice relies on its reflectivity, usually ice reflects 90% of the sunlight that hits the ice, but when ash from fires gets into the ice it ruins the melting patterns. which makes ice melt at a faster pace and when the ice melts faster it starts to disturb animal life, sea levels, and carbon dioxide levels in the air. All of these factors make the Arctic the fastest warming place on earth. Many scientists are now predicting we will have a ice-free Arctic by the end of the decade. As Jason Box states, our future lies in the ice.

I agree with you, and think that we need to adopt protocols to reduce wildfires impact and risks. If we reduced the amount of wild fires by methods of cutting down debris, clearing forest floor debris, and cutting low tree branches we can reduce the risk of an wildfire. I also think that we can use better methods to put out fires like to using better equipment, using more people to fight forest fires and also to use more resources like helicopters to put out fires. If we use these two methods to reduce fires damages and chances then we can also reduce the amount of dark snow. And in turn we will reduce ice melt do in the poles.
