Hair Salons--Detrimental to Mother Earth?
Hi, I am Anne, a high school student in California who has curly hair and like a lot of other girls/guys love to get my hair cut or done for certain events. I have never truly thought about all of the ways that my likings have effected the planet. Something as simple as getting a haircut can cause huge excess amounts of waste and use thousands upon thousands of gallons of water a year, and thousands of dollars down the drain for electricity. I found this website that calculates how much an electricity bill would be for a sample hair salon (I pulled the information from my own hair salon/experiences) http://www.coned.com/customercentral/ca … _Calc.html
I cannot imagine a bill of that size per year. Not only is that outrageously high, the electricity used stems from power plants that pollute the earth. Simple tips you can bring up to your hair salon to lower their costs and reduce their carbon footprint are:
1. Switch all lights to use LED lightbulbs
2. Switch bathroom lights to censor dependent so they will automatically turn off if a customer forgets
3. U se sink tap flow reducing rings to bring down amount of water used
4. Turn the water down! You do not need scalding hot water-- this will lower electricity use by more than 10%
5. Make sure your water heater/hot water pipes are insulated
These are just a few simple tips any institution can use to reduce their bills and their carbon footprint
