Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Keystone Changes

GClarkClough

Unfortunately, I as an individual have an above average carbon footprint. However, this is confusing, if you look at everything that do, down the line of my actions and choices in benefiting the environment in almost every aspect I am below the average. Unfortunately, not all conservation efforts are weighted equally. Certain keystone actions cause astronomically higher effects on the environment than others. For me, its airplanes, for other people it may be something else; regardless, one shortcoming on my part outweighed all of my other conservation efforts. Moving forward if we want to improve our carbon output, we need to analyze the specific issues in respect to weighted importance. That doesn't mean you can ignore the low carbon producing measures, just that you should be aware of how they are weighted so that you do not delude yourself in your efforts.

Hi, Gabriel. Nice to see you and I want to tell you that I'm also above the average, my biggest part is also the airplanes, and as far as I know, a lot of my classmates are airplanes, too. I agree with you that you said wo should analyze which part cause the most carbon, but I think despite this, we also need to figure out some structural solution to fix it. I think it is impossible to ask people take less planes, so hope the technology in the future will solve it.

Hi, I am Jimmy from China. I might have a similar footprint with yours. The transportation part has the highest proportion in my footprint. The reason why this part is so high just like yours. I love travelling and I used to travel abroad several times per year. That means I should take a long-time flight. My suggestion is reduce your travel times or travel nearby. That is not a good solution but that is the solution I can make by myself. So hopefully, in the future, some technologies can help us fix that problem.
