Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint (Poland)

ollylovered

Hi! My name is Oliwia. I'm 17 years old. I live i Rybnik, Poland.
My average carbon footprint is 5,461 kgs and in Poland average is 6,526 kgs. I've got the highest score in the category called ‘home’ – 4,649 kgs. The lowest score I have got  in category called 'Transportation' because it is only 1 kgs!! yikes The result is low, because I try to walk on foot
What is your opinion about my total carbon foot
print? smile

sdstahlman

Your carbon footprint is definitely impressive. I'm amazed by how little impact you have concerning transportation. It's the major cause for you being below average, after all. And that is really good, especially if you stay in that range. Overall, great job, and I am thoroughly impressed!

MichaelB

Hello, Oliwia! I am Michael, a student in the US. That is very impressive. It is expected that your highest score would be in home; from what I've heard, the environment of Poland can be relatively unforgiving, so it's nice to have a heated home. My grandmother is from Poland; she used to walk on foot nearly everywhere as well. You do not need to really change anything; you have a low average for a low-average country! Keep up the good work!

arielrivera

Your carbon footprint is very low! My highest category was transportation and the lowest was my purchases. I can't believe that your transportation was only 1 kilogram when mine was at 10,220 kilograms. The overall carbon footprint for my region in the United States was at 15,918 kilograms which is much higher than Poland's average of 6,526. It's good that you mostly walk as much as you do for transportation so I might have to try that too to lower my carbon footprint.

bcarroll

Hi Oliwia my name is Brandon, I’m from the USA. My total carbon footprint is 14,571 kilograms, compared to mine your carbon footprint is almost 1/3 of it. My highest category was my transportation, it was 6,971 kilograms. I think its great that your transportation is only 1 kilogram, walking around seems like it greatly lowers your carbon footprint. Where I live I have to drive everywhere to get around, and we don’t have any public transportation. Since there isn’t anywhere that is walking distance, I am going to try and carpool with others in an attempt to lower my carbon footprint.

aylagutschick

Your carbon footprint is very close to mine! It is really good that you try to walk on foot. I can't believe you only have 1kg for transportation! That's crazy. I wish I could do that but it is hard with a busy schedule. How do you walk all the time?

EmilyLown

Your carbon footprint is extremely low compared to mine, which totaled at approximately 28,000kgs. It's great that you make an effort to walk on foot. This has inspired me to walk more as well. Keep up the great work!

Adonis35

My footprint is almost three times that. Home is also my highest category except mine is closer to 7,000 kg. That is really good that you have a transportation of onlt 1kg. I wish that I had a smaller impact and not so harmful to the earth

EBeaver

That's a really good footprint for transportation. Walking places really helps lower your footprint, and because I drive a lot I actually have a high footprint in that section. Overall, I think yours is very low though.

seanhan

Hi Oliwia my name is Sean and I'm from the US. Im surprised about how low your footprint was and how big your home footprint was. My footprint was low like yours  it was 5,462 but all of my things were about even to each other. What type of house do you live in? Its good that you try to walk everywhere, I do to.

dbrotherton20

Your carbon footprint is very low compared to mine, which totaled at 44,000 kgs. I am impressed that your transportation is only 1 kgs! There is no way my footprint for transportation would ever be that low considering that my family and I are traveling constantly. It it really good that you are walking on foot and not driving to all of these places.

beauxbennett

Hello! My name is Beaux! I am a student from North Carolina. My footprint is a little higher, and I think that's because we have a lot of unnecessary luxuries that we as a country have grown adapt to. . . But I try as hard as I can to be eco conscious. I admire just how low your footprint it! I find it comforting to find other people who are courteous of the environment, and try to limit their direct carbon output by walking. Great job on doing your part to save the environment smile

laurahayes22

Hi Olivva, your carbon footprint is significantly lower than mine, which is great! I think it is awesome that your transportation footprint is really low. I drive a lot to everywhere that I go. But yours seems to be the opposite since you walk almost everywhere you go!

alexiamartin

Your footprint is very very low! My footprint and most of the people around me have a much higher transportation number, which is because most of us don't walk where we go.  Most of us travel a lot and tend to drive more than we actually need to.  I think you have a great carbon footprint!

hurleytusa

Wow!! That is so low and so very impressive! My carbon footprint was double that at 14,192 and the FL average is 13,115. My "home" was the highest because i live with 10 people, but we try to be conservative with low flow toilets and reusing many house hold items. I wish my transportation was as low as yours, sadly i drive a lot.

Cdaddario14

You're carbon footprint is impressive especially your travel. I live in Florida and you have to drive everywhere. You can't  really walk anywhere, everything is so spread out here and that reflects my carbon footprint. My traveling takes up half of my carbon footprint which is ridiculous .My home carbon footprint was below average in my region. I think it was because my family composts yard and food waste. If you want to lower your carbon footprint more you should try it. This article explains what composting is and guides you through the process. http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/massde … waste.html

amullinnix

Hello, my name is Aubri Mullinnix. your carbon footprint is very impressive. I am from Florida and the average for my region is 13,115 kgs. In Florida we have to drive everywhere because of how spread we are, walking is really not an option which leads to travel being my highest section. I am impressed with how low your travels are. My carbon foot was still below average in my region I believe it was because of my diet. Here is an article that speaks about how your "food footprint" plays a rolehttp://shrinkthatfootprint.com/shrink-y … -footprint.

juantorres11

Hello, my name is Juan. Your carbon footprint is very good, compared to mine which is at a high 20,000. My highest category was transportation. I believe that it is a good thing to try and walk as much as you can. I think i should stop driving everywhere and begin to run or walk if the location i am going to is close enough.

nathan-reid

Great job on having a low footprint mine is above 20,000 and you could also try to reduce your home portion because it is the largest in your footprint.

bryannamckeon

My carbon footprint is over double the size of yours because of my transportation section. I can't really walk anywhere because everything is so far away and dangerous to walk to.

blowe436930

Thats awesome on your carbon footprint as mine was at least 26000 kgs above yours so keep it up. Regarding your home portion maybe you could use less wood or fossil fuels to heat your home and wear more clothes in the winter.

sarahcgibson

Hi! I'm Sarah from the United States. My carbon foot print is more than double yours. But mine is actually a result of transportation. It's great to hear that you try to walk on foot a lot! I need to start trying new types of transportation rather than just always riding in a car. My footprint was pretty low in the home category. What do you think made yours so high? Your carbon footprint is pretty impressive though.

andrewmerrill

Wow, thats a super low carbon footprint compared to the United States. My carbon footprint is over 20,000kgs and i'm lower than the average in my class. I've never been to Poland but I imagine it must be nice.

dancaruso

Hello, our carbon footprints were similar because transportation was my lowest category too. I try to carpool or walk to the places I want to go and I do not have a car, so my transportation is pretty low. My highest category is Home and that is due to my over use of water and A/C.
