Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

One easy way to reduce your footprint in the home category is to make sure you always turn your lights off when you leave a room. It is unnecessary to have them on when no one is using them. You can also try using natural light by opening curtains and shades to let sunlight in instead of using electric lighting. This not only reduces your footprint, but also saves money. Also, since you live in Switzerland, I'm assuming you need to have your heater on very often. You can try and use your heater a little less or at a little bit of a cooler temperature and wear jackets and use blankets to make up for the difference. That may be hard since Switzerland is very cold. One more way to lower your carbon footprint in the home category is to take shorter showers. Since I am a girl I tend to take 15 minute showers, now I have reduced that time to 5 minutes and it has helped my carbon footprint dramatically. I hope I was helpful and that you find your own creative ways to lower your carbon footprint.
