Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Footprint - Zuzia, Rybnik, Poland

zuzek2954

Hi! My name is Zuzia.
I am 17 years old. I live in Rybnik, Poland.
I think that my carbon footprint is high, but I would to know what do you think about that. My carbon footprint is 7,555kgs of CO2, in Poland it is 6.526 kgs of CO2. Category ‘home’ got highest score – 5,342 kgs. This is much more than in my region. I would like to have lower score in this category. Anything else is good. Can you tell me what can i do to have lower carbon footprint?

Maybe you should try using less electricity or cut down on water usage. There is plenty of ways to lower your home score. One way I am lowering my home score is taking shorter showers. My highest score was transportation because of how much I travel. But your carbon footprint was significantly lower than my score.

Your house carbon usage can be lowered in many ways. One way is by simply turning off the lights in the rooms you are not using to save energy. Another way is by using less water when washing dishes or brushing your teeth.

Your carbon footprint but much lower then mine. You could try to do little things like make sure that turn off light switches before you leave the room and turn off the water while you're brushing your teeth.

my carbon footprint is just about the same as yours! but just try to cut down on the use at home.

Thank you very much for your answers! I try to use it in my daily life! But tell me what type of bulbs should i use? Where can i buy energy-saving bulbs? Please tell me something about the energy consumption of energy-saving light bulbs.

Your carbon footprint is not too bad. I think a great way to reduce your home carbon is to reduce the amount of light usage and the amount of using water. My highest carbon is in transportation do to the fact that i drive around a lot which I am trying to reduce.

Try to reduce the amount of unnecessary water leak from the pipes, driving with public transport instead of cars, also installing styrofoam isolation on your house is a great way to reduce the amount of heat needed to warm up the house, just google something, you'll figure it out smile

You should replace your lightbulbs if you're still using the ones which produce more heat than light. Also my mothers' trick is to wash all the clothes in the night when (at least in Croatia) electricity costs lesser than during the day. And take care of using your heating system,  you're probably using it a little bit unnecessary which is a problem because people get used to heating the house even in normal temperatures.

My carbon foot print is higher than yours. And I want to do something different to reduce releasing carbon. So I want to share some solution to you. Actually, I did not clearly know where is Rybnik, and I searched that just now. And I feel that is a great country. So I think you can take some public transportation instead of driving your own car. Like, you can ride bikes to go some close place. You also can do some exercises by riding bikes. If you want to go somewhere further, you can take a city bus or something like that. And that is just my personal opinion. I think we can protect the environment together and have a nice day. : )

Here are just a few ways to lower your carbon footprint.  Turn off the lights when natural light is sufficient and when you leave the room. Keep your temperature system on a moderate setting while you're in the room. Use your windows wisely! If your climate control system is on, shut them...if you need a little fresh air, turn off the heat or AC.  Cut down the number of appliances you are running and you will save big on energy. For example, share your minifridge with roomates and minimize the number of printers in your office.  Power your computer down when you're away. A computer turned off uses at least 65% less energy than a computer left on or idle on a screen saver.  Only do full loads of laundry and use the bright colors cycle whenever possible.  Try to take shorter showers. The less hot water you use, the less energy is needed to heat the water.  Switch to CFL bulbs: Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 75% less energy than incandescent and last up to 10 times longer.  Good luck!

I think you carbon footprint is not that bad. To be honest, my carbon footprint is high than yours. I think a good way to reduce your carbon footprint is to use less lights and water. For instance, when there's nobody home, remember to turn off the lights. You can  use CFL Light Bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs in order to save energy. Taking a shorter time shower is also a good idea to reduce your carbon footprint. Those are my suggestion. Goog luck and have a nice day!
