Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

The Fight for a Cleaner Community
As many of you know Fast Food is an issue in the world and especially in the United States. I live and go to school in Oakland California; an amazing city with lots to offer, yet a huge problem with poverty and violence. I work in the after school program of an Oakland Elementary School, Reach Academy, this program really does wonders to the children and the community because it feeds, protects, and tutors the children in a problematic area. Everyday I help set up snack time which is at 3:00- the children get a juice box, some kind of cracker or snack, and a piece of fruit. The food comes from an organization that gives to after school programs for free( I am sure you can picture that the food is not top of the line). It worries me that a lot of these children do not eat vegetables and fruit because when I have talked to them McDonalds and Fast food are the commonalities. Fast food is a huge contributor to the carbon footprint of the earth. I believe that instituting a garden in the school or in the area (a community garden) would serve as a huge benefit to the families of the area. Here is an article talking about efforts in Oakland communities, similar to what I have discussed above. The message I give to our generation (we are the future) is to be aware of what is around us and actively make the difference that is necessary.

Great post,, I agree that fast food is very big in this area. My family is also guilty of stopping for some fast food when we are too lazy to go home a cook a full meal and then clean up from that meal. Or if we are just in a rush and picking up some fast food is easier. But I really like your suggestion about putting a garden in at schools. I think that it is a great fun and educational idea. Like you said it would benefit the families in the area in many ways. I think that the garden would not only serve as a healthy food option for those who have access to the wonderful things that can grow in the garden but also gives the students a chance to get out in the environment. They can get hands on experience and learn about plants and how things grow. It can be used as a way to learn about the environment and humans impact on the environment. Getting outside and planting things, and watching them grow, in my opinion, would be a great thing to do at schools!
