Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon footprint 2

zoel

Hello, I really want to share my carbon footprint. Compare to the average and the other students, my carbon footprint is much more higher. The reason why my result was so high was because of the transportation. I like travelling and most of the time I get to that place by plane. I find flying will definitely raise my average carbon footprint. But I think it is hard to change it. If I want to reduce the carbon this year, I can not take plane as always as I did before, I need to chose the other transportation, but it will wasted my time at the same time and I don't have long time in my holiday, so maybe the only way I can do is give up the trip or change to the other places.

Hi Zoe, my name is Alexis (USA). My average carbon footprint was also much higher than my region. My largest section was also transportation. My family and I travel almost every weekend, and last year I flew twice to California, which really increased my total carbon footprint. You could try carpooling, which will help save some carbon. Because it would take a long time to drive to California, I also feel that the only way to really get there is to fly.

Hey Zoe! My name is Alexis (from North Carolina) and surprisingly, my transportation was one of my lower averages. I think this is because I have never ridden on an airplane hmm and I typically carpool with my large family (of ten). This lowered the numbers. I definitely think that flying was the thing that most increased your numbers. I don't think that you should stop traveling because traveling is AMAZING, but definitely try to carpool more and maybe fly less. Try to watch all of your ways of travel to compensate for your flights. smile

Hey Zoe! My name is Claire (from NC, USA), thank you for sharing your carbon footprint! My transportation was my high category too! It was 9,113 kg, what was yours? How much higher was it compared to the others? I like to travel as well! Flying is one of my favorite things, but reducing it will definitely help your carbon footprint. Changing plans to closer places for less travel time would help a lot! Also think about the little things too, like just driving to school! Anything helps!

Hi Zoe! My name is Laura. I am from the United States and my carbon footprint for transportation is also very high.  This is because I am constantly around and about to get different places.  My total carbon footprint for transportation is 11,528 kgs. This is a crazy amount and I really need to work towards ways to reduce these numbers and reduce my negative impact on the environment.

NoelleS

Hi! I'm Noelle. For me, food was the biggest impact. Transportation was the second highest for me, but I expected it to be more based on what others in my community got. I guess it's because I don't travel too often, and when I do I tend to carpool. To lower your transportation score you could start carpooling when you go somewhere closer or with friends. For air travel, you could pick the shortest route. Good luck lowering your impact!

Hi Zoe! My carbon footprint is much higher than the average as well. Most of my footprint comes from transportation. I travel a lot too and I am going to try to reduce by footprint by carpooling whenever possible and trying fly with airline companies that are more environmentally conscious.

Hi Zoe! I think it is very interesting and rare to see that flying is the cause of your increased carbon footprint, and I agree with you it is a problem that is very difficult to solve compared to other problems. I too have a higher than average carbon footprint due to transportation, but since I have never been on a plane it is much easier to find a way to mitigate my footprint in comparison.

Zoe, I found the same exact thing to be true when I took the carbon footprint test. I was around average in all categories except transportation, which was way above. I find it particularly interesting that we have the same results, even though we live in such different parts of the country.
I think that we depend so heavily on transportation because it is so accessible to us. We decide to go to schools that are farther away, or visit places half way around the world because it’s so much easier than it used to be. Without access to such quick transportation, we might start to think twice about picking a school that is 15 miles away (something that I did). As a society, we’ve become numb to the impact transportation has on our carbon footprint. I think that it’s important to stop and consider whether using our car to get to the local drugstore is necessary, or if maybe walking or biking could be a better way to go. We should stop constantly putting convenience and ease over what is best for our earth.

Hi Zoe
I also had a very high carbon footprint mostly due to transportation.  I think that flying to far away places has become the norm for so many people, at least socially and economically.  However, environmentally there is no proportionality that we can use because we are simply running out of resources.  I also told myself not to fly as much, just as you did.  I do not think that this will solve anything because the planes will still take off, but it can change if enough people take this stand.

I agree with you that flying is the main reason why your carbon footprint is higher than the average of the other students but you have to find a middle between taking a plane to get to there quicker or get there slower by not taking a plane.

My carbon footprint was well above the average too. My transportation is also the reason as to why my total carbon footprint was so high. I agree with you that in order to reduce your carbon footprint you would have to reduce the amount of times that you travel each year.
