Are wildfires to blame for glaciers melting in Greenland?
Jason Box, a glaciologist has been studying why glaciers in Greenland have been rapidly melting over the past few years. He has predicted the shedding of the Petermann Glacier (the largest in Greenland) and also the surface melting of glaciers in Greenland. His theory of why glaciers are melting is that soot from wildfires is traveling to Greenland and landing on the glaciers which is lowering the reflectivity. Because snow is white, it has a 90% reflectivity rate. When black soot lands on the snow it does not reflect the sun, it absorbs it. This could be the reason for the melting of Greenland glaciers
I agree. Wildfires are indeed the thing to blame for the melting of glaciers. Wildfires cause soot to be released into the atmosphere and then lands on the glaciers. The sun is attracted to black and so the soot attracts the suns heat. This causes the glaciers to melt. The glaciers melting also causes the ocean levels to rise. This is the reason for glacier melting.
