Ocean Acidification
Climate change is becoming a more urgent problem on a daily basis. Many people focus on the loss of stratospheric ozone as a result of climate change and consequent global warming, but there is another dire consequence of carbon dioxide emissions resulting in climate change. Due to increased anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide, mostly the combustion of fossil fuels, carbon dioxide has begun to seep into the oceans. Nearly 25% of all carbon dioxide produced seeps into the ocean. This does slow global warming because the carbon is not going into the atmosphere, but at the price of oceans. The ocean has become 30% more acidic in recent years due to this pollution, and many animals are beginning to feel the impact already. The shells of some plankton, the basis of the marine food chain, have already begun to disintegrate, and coral bleaching is occurring at a rapid rate. Increase awareness of what scientists call the “second carbon pollution problem”.
