Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused?

The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.

But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?

In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?

Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?

Climate change is real and is only getting worse due to our ignorance of it. While mainstream politics will claim it false (quotes from politicians https://www.skepticalscience.com/skepticquotes.php), it is noticeable in America, as over this winter places such as New York were warm during winter months, http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/20 … esday.html. Additionally, in my local community we have been experiences extremely high temperatures the past few years.

I completely agree, climate change is hurting our earth and the animals living on it. I wish that people took this issue seriously (including me) and make a change.

Climate change has been one of the leading global problems for a long time. Many people, animals, and plants are affected by the fact that the Earth’s global temperature has been rising extremely for a significant amount of time. People are affected by the fact that the temperature is rising because, crops will die since it is just too hot. If there isn't any food that can be grown, people won't be able to survive for a long amount of time. Also because of the high temperatures, more floods and droughts are likely to happen.

Animals and plants would be affected by the climate change because, animals are already adapted to the temperature and conditions to where they live. If these conditions change suddenly the animals wouldn’t be able to adapt to the change that quickly, and many animals will become extinct. If animals become extinct the ecosystem will become all messed up, if monkeys are needed in some cycle in the ecosystem and they become extinct, the whole t hing will be messed up!

The idea of climate change has been a controversy among scientists about how or if it is happening, how climate change affects us, and how to prevent any further damage. The truth is that humans are mainly the cause for most of the climate change going on due to poor decisions regarding how much carbon dioxide we release into the environment. Then the aftereffects of the overload in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are the changes going on in our ecosystems. According to the National Center for Science Education, “We’re also seeing similarly dramatic changes in other aspects of climate and related effects on ecosystems, including the distribution of rainfall, storm activity, extinction of plant and animal species, and seasonal change.” This quote shows that in order to help protect our ecosystems we must reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we release into the environment. Furthermore our society must lower their carbon emissions to save what left of our ecosystems, and prevent any further damage.

Though there are several main actions that if lessened could potentially h elp our overall CO2 release. This main source of CO2 release is the amount  of natural gas or coal needed for modern day transportation, such as cars, trains, and ships. According to the National Center of Science Education, “human activity is responsible for most of the climate change in recent years, particularly the warming of the atmosphere and ocean in the last 150 years.” This is because as human technology has advanced in the last 150 years, the amount of needed energy for all these inventions has risen greatly, overall causing an increase in the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. A change in climate would have many harmful effects on the environment, as well as our society. Climate change would force animals to have to either adapt to their new temperature, or migrate to a different ecosystem. As well a higher temperature could increase the chance for wildfires, reduce the amount of crops produced by farmers, and increase the risk of floods for coastal cities due to the melting polar ice caps. Overall our population needs to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they release to save our planet before this disaster gets any larger.

I agree climate change is real. What’s even worse is that plants which we rely on to reduce CO2 emissions will not be able to absorb anymore in the future. As explained by the National Academy of Sciences, it is predicted that by 2100, plants and trees will not be able to absorb anymore CO2 due to a rise in temperature by 4 degrees celsius (39.2 degrees fahrenheit). Plants and trees naturally soak up CO2 and release oxygen. If this process stops occurring the Earth’s temperature will begin to rise and the climate will change.
   In addition, if the temperature rises, plants will not be able to receive enough water to survive. This is also known as “moisture stress.” Plants and trees will be destroyed as well as the climate. Honestly, we need to think twice about our actions and work together to defend our planet. We only have one home. To prevent this disastrous future, we need to start from the root of the problem which is reducing our CO2 emissions. I believe that humans, us, are capable of solving this problem. We created this problem, we need to fix it. In order to s olve this problem, we could reduce our CO2 production by driving less and promote walking. We could also reduce energy by turning off the lights when we are not in the room. These are only a few ways out of hundreds to reduce our CO2 production. Let’s all help the plants and the climate.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, by the year 2045, the sea level in the Florida keys is projected to have risen by 15 inches. This means that areas such as Key West, which has a thriving economy, would be subjected to more than 300 tidal floods per year. In fact, Key West already suffers from periodic flooding in times when the tides are extremely high. However, having constant flooding would cause severe damage to homes, businesses, and city property. The rising sea levels in Florida will also result in economic problems. The Keys have a $2.2 million tourism industry, and without this, thousands of jobs will be lost as well as making Florida lose money.
    The New York Times also published a map of the regions in  the world that would be most affected by flooding if the global carbon emissions continued on current trends. Their map showed that 2.6% of the global population, about 177 million people would be subjected to regular flooding. Another interesting fact is that eight of the ten countries that would be most affected are in Asia. However, further ana lysis showed that the countries that are emitting the  most carbon are not always the ones who will suffer the most consequences from flooding. The United States is one of the largest carbon emitters but only 1% of the population would be exposed to regular flooding.
    The amount of carbon that we are globally emitting is making our world warmer. As a result of the increase in temperature, there’s also an increase in sea level because the polar ice-caps are melting. With the rise in sea level comes a rise in flooding putting millions of people at risk and endangering their lives and homes. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the sea levels are rising the fastest along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico. They conducted a survey to see how much poverty per capita there would be as well as the socioeconomic risks of regular flooding. The results showed that many cities in Louisiana would be at maximum risk for rising sea levels.

Another terrifying reality of climate change is that of ocean acidification. Due to the release of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, our oceans are becoming much more acidic. The pH of a substance is measured on a scale ranging from 0 to 14. The lover the number, the more acidic. The higher the number, the more basic. Our oceans have usually maintained a slightly basic pH of 8.2.
   Starting in the 1800s with the boom of industrial manufacturing, greenhouse gasses have started to become a problem in our atmosphere. Our oceans absorb about one third of the human emitted carbon dioxide a day. That's about 22 million tons a day. This immense amount of Carbon dioxide being absorbed by our oceans has caused our ocean pH level t drop to 8.1.
   This may not seem like a huge drop right now, but considering how short of a time span that really is in relation to other major events in the Earth's history, and a change at all in the acidity of a large ecosystem is slightly unnerving mainly because this is happening because of us. Not only are we causing a major change to a major  piece of Earth, but the ecosystems within the oceans are suffering too.
   Plants and fish have started to negatively respond to the rising acidity level. Birth defects in many fish and the death of large plant populations can be traced to the rising acidity of their waters. Imagine a day where there are no healthy fish to eat and we as a generation have to explain how we let the ocean's acidity rise to that extreme of a point.
   The acidity isn't just affecting plants and fish. Think of the consequences for water desalination. It's expensive enough to desalinate water, but if the water becomes too acidic to drink, the prices of desalination are sure to skyrocket. This could cause more problems in terms of getting fresh water to drink in places where there is none or places with large populations.
