Climate change is a very prominent issue within the world today and it continues to become more of a threat. While researching, I found it interesting to explore both sides of the argument on an issue. My focus was on two articles from a database called Opposing Viewpoints in Context about how global warming may or may not be leading to sea level rises. On the pro side, Stuart Gaffin believes that forecasts point toward the thermal expansion of warming oceans and the melting of glaciers and ice caps, which will cause the sea level to rise up to one meter. He has predicted this to occur during the twenty first century. The many green house gases within the atmosphere including carbon dioxide and methane are expected to cause warming of the Earth. An increasing energy demand due to population growth and development is estimated to cause Earth’s surface to warm between 2 and 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to this heating of the earth, the small glaciers and ice caps will melt causing the global sea level to rise of 0.5 to 1 meter. Sea level rise could be possibly catastrophic co nsidering the sea level has already been rising 3 centimeters in the past decade. The sea level will raise because of the thermal expansion of seawater as it warms and the melting of glaciers. This warming is due to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In contrast, Richard Terry believes that the sea level is not and will not rise any time soon. In his opinion, sea level changes involve consideration of many factors including changes in tides, earth movements, and other oceanic and climatic processes. The computer simulations of global warming supporters can accurately model none of these factors. He claims that the rising temperatures will increase evaporation and lead to more ice being trapped in the Antarctic Ice Sheet. This may lower the sea level by about a foot. Terry believes there is no credible evidence to prove rising sea levels. Warming at the poles means more ice, not a rise in sea level.
