Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused?

The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.

But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?

In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?

Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?

Climate change is real, but human-caused?

I personally believe that climate change is real, but it is not completely human-caused. Climate change is real because global temperature is really rising, sea level is really rising and seasons really become more extreme these years. The data from different scientific organizations around the world does not lie.
However, the Earth has a constantly changing climate that I believe humans cannot interfere very much even when we each have very much carbon footprint today. There are strong negative feedbacks that restore the effects of carbon emissions and greenhouse gas. In my opinion, humans only accelerate the climate change process, but cannot change the climate on their own if the Earth is going through an Ice Age. In the scientific paper "Past Climate Cycles: Ice Age Speculations" on the website "The Discovery of Global Warming", the most highlighted idea was climate goes in cycles. We are now in the interglacial period, which is supposedly warmer, and in terms of the large climate pattern, this much fluctuation is not very significant. Either way, I believe all aspe cts of sustainable living is necessary because apart from helping the environment, it is an economic way of living and shows respect to people who produced or help manage the resources or service.

I have to agree. I believe that while humans contribute majorly to the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, we are not the only cause of climate change. The earth naturally heats and cools without our influence. According to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, scientists have yet to prove that climate change is a direct result of greenhouse gas emissions. While we may not be the only cause of climate change their are still many things we can do to improve our environment and the carbon emissions, such as recycling, conserving water, heat, and electricity, and just staying aware of our daily tasks and habits that negatively affect our home planet. If we keep ourselves in check we can start to improve our environment for all who share earth.

I agree with a lot of the things you guys mentioned. However, I also believe that there is no real proof that humans are causing climate change. The main argument used for pro-human-caused climate change is concerning CO2 levels. Most scientists say that the rise of temperature is caused by a rise in CO2 levels. According to my research, there is no direct correlation between the two. They may have started at the same time, but other than that they are not related. 460 million years ago there was an ice age. The temperatures were below 0 degrees Celsius for the entire year. During this time, the CO2 levels were 5 times higher than they are currently. This shows that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is not causing a rise in temperatures. Now let's talk about temperatures. Temperatures have had periods of fluctuation since the beginning of time. In the medieval ages, the summer temperatures were consistently higher than they are today. This proves that there have been other times when the temperature increased during a period of time. This increase of temperature throug hout the 20th and 21st century is a natural change that will prepare the earth for a cold period.

In regards to what Lily D said, I have to say that is don't agree with her. According to NASA GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE there has been significant increase in green house gasses, such as carbon dioxide and methane which then gets trapped in the atmosphere thus creating the warmer temperatures. Humans in my opinion are held accountable for this drastic change. Yes, the Earth releases these green house gasses naturally, but the trees are supposed to change gasses such as carbon dioxide to oxygen. But humans have been increasing the amount of green house gasses with the invention of automobiles and such. This would be fine except for the fact that more trees are being chopped down. In my opinion there is lots of evidence point directly towards humans as the reasons for this drastic climate change and something needs to be done to reverse these affects.
