Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused?

The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.

But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?

In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?

Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?

Why do we ignore climate change?

In the last two hundred years (since the first mention of the greenhouse effect) we've made a big progress in figuring out how Earth's climate works, how it's changing and why. Why have we had such a hard time acting on that knowledge? We just kept adding CO2 to Earth's insulating layer. That's warming the air, changing the amount of ice, the patterns of rainfall and the ocean itself. Could it be that we just didn't want to know? Trying to stop climate change would change the way we live and that would be really tough to do. The other thing is that it's hard for us to actually see what's happening. The gas that causes it is invisible and the changes play out over decades. When we think about it, it can easily seem far away. But solving it can't wait for tomorrow and we can't wait for other people to solve it for us.

I feel like that this is an issue, but I do believe that climate change is a natural process which can't be stopped. I do believe that humans have the power to make this change, but it would require finding alternative energy supplies, reducing CO2 emission, and removing some of the CO2 already present in the atmosphere. I do believe that if we fix some of the problems with climate change, then we can live a happier future, but I also believe that these will cause problems which we won't understand how to fix.

A little greenhouse effect is natural. Earth's temperature increases naturally over years, keeping Earth at a temperature that is suitable for human life. But recently global warming has been so rapid and it's proven that it's because of human activity which increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. I think that we are choosing to ignore climate change as well. Personally, I believe this is because we do not want to give up the luxuries or habits that we have that contribute to it such as driving low fuel-efficiency cars or our constant want for energy as the world becomes more and more developed. While we may agree that it is a real problem and that something must be done, very few people are prepared to act on this as the majority of the population does not want their lives to change to become more eco-friendly.
Additionally, I found an excellent article (https://www.climaterealityproject.org/b … you-can-do) that gives some other potential reasons for why we ignore climate change. At first, I was sort of skeptical about it, but as I went on I found myself agreeing with what the article was saying. I definitely recommend reading more if you're interested in a more scientific answer to your original question.

I agree with you. Thank you for sharing the article!

Yeah I think people ignore climate change. Because we know what's happening with the Earth but we don't do anything about it because we're lazy and/or don't care. I agree with you Tenaya, I think people aren't willing to give up the luxuries they've accustomed to. I also think some people try to change their actions and pay more attention for a bit, but then give up and say whatever and keep doing what they were doing before because they now have the satisfaction of knowing they tried and don't feel as guilty because they tried to do something

I believe that over time people have become accustomed to getting automatic results that you can see thanks to modern day inventions like phones.  People probably choose to ignore climate change because they know that to receive a result you would have to wait a very long time. There are not enough people who are committed to protecting the Earth we live in. Most people probably think that since the effects of climate change are not being severely seen or expressed in their area then it does not affect them. In reality, climate change affects all of us because it is causing harmful effects in the world we live in. I can appreciate people who promise to help but if we are going to be honest these promises are like New Year's Resolutions. They start out strong and fizzle out by the time it is March.

I think that people are not acting on their knowledge simply because they do not care enough to see change, or they are not motivated to do it themselves. Many people also feel like they don't have time to worry about anything other than what is put in front of them at the moment, and that is a very big problem. I think that you are right in saying that maybe people do not want to know because they do not think that global warming is their concern, for it will continue to get worse and worse for generations way later.
