Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused?

The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.

But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?

In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?

Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?

Tens of thousands scientists from around the world have gathered an overwhelming amount of evidence pointing at one source, humans. Humans are the main cause for climate change. They burn fossil fuel, cut down trees and throw trash that ends in the sea. We are taking more from the earth than we need. Some people hire scientists to tell lies about climate change for the good of their business. But it‘s hard to lie about something that many of us know about and see proof of. We know that the ice is melting, sea level rising and animals dying like the polar bears. The challenge is how to effectively communicate this fact to policy makers and to the public which does not know what to believe.

I agree! Do you have some suggestions on effective ways to communicate about climate change to people who either don't believe it or believe it but don't care very much?

There is a course at my school that we have to attend. It is about climate change, global warming and more. We are shown many evidence and do projects that only increase the understanding of what we are doing and what is happening around us.

I agree with you as well. We are the main cause of climate change and sea levels rising. The amount of fossil fuels we burn is a major reason why this is all happening. I believe that together as a community, we need to change and not let all of this happen. We need to work together and fix this.

I agree that humans are messing up the earth. With all the co2 we put into the atmosphere we really mess it up. I think if we all come together we can save the planet. Even little steps like carpooling can help the earth.

It doesn't matter whether people believe whether climate change is real or whether we have caused, the fact of the matter is that the Earth is in a downward spiral, and that if we do not do anything, life as we know it could be gone within our lifetimes. However, humanity is pathetic, and people only believe what suits their agenda. Without social reform, frankly, humanity may become extinct.

I agree with you. Sadly, there are many people who would rather ignore climate change than face it. According to a book called "Subliminal-how your unconscious mind rules your behavior", by Leonard Mlodinow, people often subconsciously adjust their standards for accepting evidence to support their conclusions, and even well thought out and reasonable arguments do not change their opinion. Furthermore, when people have a set opinion, they pay more attention to facts supporting that opinion than to ones that don't support the opinion. Probably a good way to convince people that climate change is real is to be open and patient with people and be sure to mention how it could personally affect them or someone they know.

I agree with all of you on the fact that us humans are the main cause of climate change. We constantly burn a ton of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere for out own good, but at what cost. We destroy the plane that has sustained us since the beginning and we might be taking that away from ourselves.

I agree with Lewis. Although, in my personal opinion I believe climate change existed since the beginning of Earth and with humans using up all natural resources to upgrade technology for our everyday life have increased this change by a lot. If we can stop Earth's "downward spiral" by burning fossil fuels and sucking up every natural resource we can prevent humans from becoming extinct.

I agree that it is important to find a way to communicate the threat of climate change to politicians and people who don't believe it, because no matter how many small changes people make that will not be enough. If the people in power are not actively trying to reverse climate change, then we will not make much progress. We need to make politicians aware that this is a real issue, and we need to convince them to make some big changes. For now, the best we can do is all make small lifestyle changes, but our eventual goal should be to get the government to make new laws and policies regarding climate change.

I agree with all of you. Science shows that if we keep on heading on this downward spiral, our planet will end up like Venus, where our atmosphere will be super dense and made up of mostly carbon dioxide and nitrogen, baking the planet so it is hotter than Mercury, the environment will become super acidic, and every living thing on Earth will be exterminated. Humans will help turn Earth into a literal Hell, and all these stupid companies and politicians are still telling people that there is no climate change because they want as much money as they can and they don't what they have to do to get it. If it means killing everything, they'll do it.
On a lighter note, I think a way to make them stop is to use alternatives to fossil fuels, like solar power. If people use more of that, the companies will start losing money and business, until they either go bankrupt or switch to using solar power, like the rest of the world. Buy less processed foods, if you can, and maybe start a garden or buy locally grown foods.
