The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.
But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?
In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?
Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?
Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused? >
Climate change is Human Caused
I believe that climate change is human caused. Because before the industrial age there was little Co2 emissions because fossil fuels where not being burned and there was no electricity. Our earths atmosphere specifically the ozone layer, catches heat and solar flares from the sun. It takes a while for that heat to be released back. But since the industrial age. Humans have been putting Co2 in the air like crazy. This then goes to the ozone layer creating greenhouse gases which takes even longer to release back into space. This causes climate change because the earth is heating up causing certain environments to adapt to the change to the rise in heat or just die. This is why climate change is human caused. But what can humans do to stop crazy Co2 emissions?
I agree. I believe that humans are major contributors to climate change. Each of us give off carbon, and as our population grows, so does the amount of carbon we are giving off into the atmosphere making our world much more polluted.
I also agree that climate change is human caused. A practically irrefutable piece of evidence is the rate at which carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has changed in the last 500 million years. From 500 million years ago to 22,000 years ago, the ppm of carbon dioxide has dropped by about 6,000 ppm. In the last century, the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen by 42 ppm. This means that carbon dioxide levels are currently rising 35,000 times faster than they have been dropping over the last 500 million years.
In the past, carbon dioxide spikes like this have been caused by things like asteroid strikes, volcanic activity, etc. However, there has been nothing like that recently that could cause a carbon dioxide spike. The only major change in the last century is the rapid expansion of human civilization. With that being the only major change on the Earth right now, there’s nothing else that can be causing this carbon dioxide spike. We would clearly be able to see if something was releasing mass amounts of carbon dioxide. So, the only thing that can be doing this is us.
