Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

A way to reduce my carbon footprint

chirag11

My carbon footprint was unexpected. I think my footprint is high and this is because of travelling and using electric appliances. From now i will take every possible step to reduce it...

Mine was larger than I expected as well. Travel can get big quite quickly, and taking any airplane trips raised your footprint a lot. As for electric appliances, though, that depends of where you live, and your region's access to clean electricity.  In my region, for example, using electricity would be better for the environment.

My footprint was larger than the the average person in my region as well. This however wasn't too surprising, because i had learned about carbon footprint already. What was surprising was that only my travel section was higher than average, everything else was lower. Especially my food section; it was 416 kgs where the average was 2,704 kgs. This is mostly because I'm a vegetarian but also due to eating mostly organic, local foods. These would be great ways to cut down your carbon footprint. Also, taking less flights.

I found that your carbon footprint can change a ton by just choosing to eat meat or not. I was really surprised when I went way over average, mostly just because I eat meat...

I would have had a carbon footprint lower than my region's average but I took two 3,500 mile flights last summer, which had a surprisingly large impact. I was also surprised by how much the average footprint from purchases was in my region.

My carbon footprint was higher than average mostly because of my airplane flights as well. I would like to lower my footprint, but I know it won't be super easy to do, as I already have 1 vacation planned for next year.

My carbon footprint was also higher than average. I think the top two main reasons for my carbon high carbon footprint was my airplane flights and the lights in my home. I would like to change this by turning off more lights when I am not using them, and trying to fly less often.

Albeit the fact that my carbon footprint was roughly 50% less than my regional average, the only thing closest to reaching above average was food. It was surprising to me that eating meat had a massive affect on my footprint.

My carbon footprint was higher than average because of trips too, though I took more trips than usual this year. I wasn't really surprised by what my carbon footprint was, but I was by how much travel made it go up.

My transportation score was fairly low even though I took a lot of road trips.

nick-subocz

I believe that’s because road trips have considerably less impact than planes. Taking road trips rather than airplanes is a very efficient way of taking vacations.

Em2123

I agree, though I wonder how much impact it would have as a whole if everyone riding the planes used cars to get to their destination.
