The Greenhouse Effect's Affect on Life
Recently, my classmates and I read an article on which included a section about the greenhouse effect, and what it does to our planet. In a nutshell, the greenhouse effect is a process in which greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane absorb radiation energy from the sun, and turn it into heat of which the animals of the earth have to put up with. Since the greenhouse effect makes the atmosphere warmer, the surface of our planet gets warm in turn.
Does the greenhouse effect affect climate change? There are a variety of answers and topics that can be raised from this one question, but I'd like to focus on the climate change in the present. Earth's average surface temperature has recently risen by around 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which doesn't seem to be very much, but when you look at previous temperature changes, this is a drastic difference. Since earth has been getting warmer faster, the greenhouse effect may have an impact on how fast the temperature is rising.
We humans are the main cause for the greenhouse effect. Since we are commonly releasing tons of carbo n dioxide on a day-to-day basis, along with methane, etc., and carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, the natural conclusion is that humans are contributing towards the greenhouse effect, and in turn, contributing to the rising temperature of our planet. Therefore, the main cause and problem of present climate change is not simply humans releasing carbon dioxide, but humans emitting *greenhouse gases* that are absorbing energy from the sun, and turning that into heat.
I apologize for that grammatical error in that first sentence. ![]()
