Artificial Trees as a Solution to Climate Change
Nasa's article https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/ provides evidence that atmospheric CO2 has increased since the Industrial Revolution at 400 parts per million for the first time in human history. According to this article, http://www.earth.columbia.edu/articles/view/2523 Klaus Lackner, a physicist at Arizona State University declares that "it is impossible to stop people from using fossil fuels, so we have to develop technologies which allow us to use them without creating environmental havoc to the planet." Lackner is currently working on carbon capture and sequestration strategies in attempt to reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. He and his team are developing a device called an "air extractor," modeled after the leaf of a tree, which would pull CO2 out of the air in a process called engineered chemical sinkage. [XIMG_2104b crop](//muut.com/u/footprint/s1/:footprint:22RS:ximg_2104bcrop.jpg.jpg) (image from https://www.pri.org/stories/2015-08-30/ … s-think-so ) These devices would be arranged to mimic the shape of a pine tree and stand passively in the wind and absorb CO2 as the air blows over them. Lackner hopes to have a full scale version of the system, one with tree-like structures spaced out like a forest, in 20 or 30 years. He believes that a square mile of artificial trees could absorb as much as ten million times of CO2 per year. I think developments such as Lackner's are essential for rebuilding a healthy planet.
I agree with Lackner and how he said it is impossible for humans to stop using fossil fuels. I think that the development of technology is our best bet because no matter how hard we try, humans won't change their actions in order to protect the environment. This new invention seems really amazing and I would love to read more about it the future to see if it works. I think it would have a very positive effect on the environment and is one of the most efficient ways to help it.
