Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Transportation

What i think everyone should think about. My transport numbers were way too high. Mainly because of how much i drive and way too many plane trips. People should always try to carpool with friends or others when going to school and other activities. As with traveling, you should always try to look for other means to travel than flying.

Yes, I completely agree! A great way to help with driving, are electric cars. They do not release any CO2 when charged with clean electricity.

I strongly agree with you. My transportation carbon emissions were much too high because I live a distance from my school. Although, I have been sharing a car with my mom and we try to bike as much as we possibly can to reduce our carbon footprint.

Transportation definitely had a huge negative impact on my carbon footprint as well. I agree that looking for ways to carpool, and travel by means other than flying would help decrease the carbon footprint of so many other people.

I too noticed that a large portion of my carbon footprint was attributed to transportation. It is difficult for me to reduce this as I live far away from my school, friends and just about every place I frequent. Its unrealistic for me to bike to school or use public transportation, however, I have begun to carpool with another student who lives on my route. Hopefully this helps decrease my carbon footprint.

I've always pushed my parents to invest in an electric car, rather than a standard gasoline one. After months of encouraging, it finally happened. We noticed almost an immediate change in the air quality around our driveway. Not only that, we were also able to save money on gas. So I don't see why everyone is using an electric vehicle nowadays.

I agree with you. I traveled a lot this past year and my transportation CO2 levels were really high. I did not know before the amount of harm that can do to the environment. Moving forward I am going to be more cautious of the ways I travel to decrease that level.
