Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Bicycling to reduce footprint.

When you live in a large city, it's already hard getting around because of the sheer amount of traffic. So, maybe you should forget about getting a car and get a bicycle instead. Not only would this allow you to move around the city much more quickly, but you can also save a bunch of money on gas. The added benefits would be that you can get more exercise and you won't be burning fossil fuels allowing you to reduce your carbon footprint.

I completely agree with your comment! I think bicycling is an amazing form of excercise and gets you in shape while you are helping the environment. If you are too far from work to bicycle you could think of bringing it in your car and if you want to go some place close lets say for lunch you could bicycle to lunch instead of driving. If you are close enough to work or school to bicycle think about the amount of time you save being stuck in traffic and instead having good dose of fresh air !

Well said, Isa!

I agree, bicycling has many benefits. The only problem is when living in a rural area to travel for work to inner city for most can only be done by car.

Cycling has many benefits but what happens if the weather makes biking not an option?

Dlaemmle

If the weather stops you from biking or walking maybe consider carpooling or taking trains.

This is a really good point but if you live in a city where there are lots of hills like Seattle than it can be quite tricky be able to bike everywhere

I usually take a city bus, which is a little better than driving. So if you can’t bike, use public transport!
