Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Transportation

I was surprised to find my carbon footprint with a slightly overwhelming difference in the transportation category. The average in Walnut Creek, California is 2557 kg while mine was at  3912 kg of carbon emissions. It's not too surprising considering I went to the Los Angeles and the San Diego area 3 times this year while visiting family as well as a round trip to Washington, D.C., and New York City. All together I went to Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York if I'm not mistaken. It is probably even greater because I don't know the exact distance traveled by bus. If I knew the total distance of every transportive thing I did, I would most likely be close to the 5000 kg range.

This will only be the case for this year, as I will most likely not be going to D.C. or any location around the same distance in 2015. I also will probably go at least 1 less time to LA because a wedding does not seem imminent next year. Other then that, however, I don't believe my level of carbon emissions will change because of the very nature of my family. We travel fairly ofte n and we enjoy the amazing adventures. I wish I could lower my carbon emissions, but I doubt it will happen from this category.

I agree with the fact that transportation is one of the largest issues in our carbon footprints.(Mine was bumped up a few thousands, because of my flights). I also think that humans need a new fuel other than gasoline. In such time when the world is having problems with CO2 and global warming we should pay close attention to with what we power up our machines. I hope that in recent decades scientists come up with an alternative to the internal combustion engine (such as magnetic or atomic engines). After that CO2 emissions from cars and planes will decrease, in parallel with the prices of transportation.
