In addition to the famous impacts of atmospheric carbon on global warming, there is an equally worrisome effect of carbon dioxide on the oceans: ocean acidification (or OA for short). Here at I2SEA we have a series of resources about OA, including Our Acidifying Ocean, which is an introductory activity and virtual lab (note: now mobile compatible!).
A student suggested that we start a conversation topic about OA, and here it is! Have you heard about Ocean Acidification? If so, are you worried about it? How do you think we can best raise awareness about it among your fellow students and the general public? Have you seen particularly good links or films about OA that you would like to share? I agree. We also need whales because they provide at least half of our oxygen we breath and provide nutrients (poop) for phytoplankton, the base of the marine food web. The phytoplankton also help fight climate change by taking in CO2 and are food for other species of fish. But harmful rays from the sun and pollutants from the ocean can kill them, so we need to take action to stop climate change, or else many ocean species will become extinct due to ocean acidification or not enough phytoplankton.
Yes we have to take action on this issue as soon as we can because the lower ph levels of the ocean are destroying the homes of the marine species and killing the species themselves. This will not only affect marine life but us in the future if we don't try to change.
Not only will fish die but it will weaken many underwater animals scales which will affect food chains.
First of all, we need to make industrial fishing lower. Endangered species must be save in their natural home, we need to protect them from illegal hunting. The temperature is increasing due to irresponsible people. We must keep our Earth clean and everyone on our planet will be living well.
You mean you are saying that leaving an endangered species in the wild is okay. If left as they are, there is something to be afraid of in the wild, for example, these species may be eaten by other species or they will not have enough food.
Yes, we need to do everything we can to reduce pollution in bodies of water to protect the fish. Fish will eat literally anything and they frequently end up eating trash and getting sick.
I would also say that fish are dying from all the fishing, all the plastic waste and from Co2 emissions.
I think that we need to create wildlife reserves at coral reefs to help protect the wildlife that lives there.
