Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Planes pollute a lot they are the most polluting way of transportation ( without rockets ). If we want to stop CO2 we need to use the plane less. What do you think???

Zenone

Your wrong cruise ships are the most polluting way of trasportation.

Zelda12

Okay so we need to use less planes and cruise ships.

Zelda12

Humains also help nature don't forget

alex11

How much exactly does a plane pollute?

Zenone

Zelda12 humans never helped they only made things worst they always tried but at the end the ambition and selfishness that humans have always made it bad

JuanFlores15

say less

Zelda12

90 kg of CO2 is how much a plane pollutes for 1 hour

Zenone2

But planes fly all over the planet at any time and there are thousands of planes in the air every day.

J0HN135

I think we should use planes less when traveling shorter distances. A plane's CO2 emissions are higher during the take off and landing phases. So the more planes that fly shorter distances excrete a higher amount of emissions. However, when thinking about the amount of CO2 polluted by a plane and car both traveling the same long distances, the plane would leave less emissions than the car. In this case, when traveling long distances, a plane would be more beneficial.

MatthewM-SJRState

I agree with JOHN135. For smaller distances, it's best to not use a plane. Maybe saving planes for going across the country or a large distance like that is a better option for all of us.

Zenone2

I say that the governement could spend some money for the general hybrid car producion

MatthewM-SJRState and J0HN135 might be onto something. Zenone2's post also got me thinking, wouldn't it be beneficial for us to also find a way to reduce the carbon footprint of a plane? I mean planes are being used every day multiple times a day so if we could not only reduce the amount of flights that people are taking, but also reduce how much carbon is being put into the air then we would probably improve the environment a lot more.
We also need to think about how we would regulate people from not using planes for short travels. And what does this mean for people who own their own private planes? Should there be regulations for them?

katiaa45

Planes are a fast mode of transportation, but they are very polluting.

Fonk

I think that planes are a good form of transportation, but I do in fact think that they need to have reduced emissions, as they pollute the planet very much, and it is unfortunate that a transport medium used so much pollutes like this, especially since it is the only fast way of getting to another country unless you're near a border with another country.

I think that we as a society need to move away from the idea of nonlocal vacationing. Now, I do know that I’m only a addressing one reason of why one might travel by plane to another location, which is for entertainment-based tourism and vacating. However, it is important to point out that that is one of the main factors of almost pointless waste of travel. Personal experiences and “living life to its fullest” are important, but one doesn’t have to travel that far to gain them

IaRycerz

I like claireasaurusrex´s suggestion of limitations on travel, maybe governments could look at what areas have public transportation between them available and which would require flights and make guidelines based on that? It would be a large undertaking though. Additionally, maybe people purchasing private planes should be required make them at least partially powered by biofuel. Zenone2 is right that we should look at moving towards sustainable fuel sources.

MorganaKato

I do like idea of reducing plane flights for short distances. But I also think a new and fresh idea would be to find a way to change the type of fuel that planes take. Just like cars, we created electric cars and solar powered cars that take little to no gas at all. The real question is, can we create the same technology for planes? An even bigger idea would be to create a whole different method of air transportation that doesn't take any polluting fuel at all in the first place. Both of these ideas would be extremely futuristic and beneficial, but it's up to ours and future generations to start brainstorming whether or not it's possible.
